This work is a showcase for the integration of systems biology and bioinformatics tools, algorithms and models for deciphering biological phenomena. More specifically, it integrates (i) prediction algorithms for identifying and characterizing molecular interactions, (ii) structural modelling of molecule complexes, (iii) network analysis approaches, and (iv) mathematical modelling and simulation. Two comprehensive workflows are implemented for the analysis of collective target gene regulation by microRNAs and for the prediction of cooperating microRNA pairs and their mutual target genes. In two case studies mechanisms of fine-tuned target gene regulation are revealed for different cellular processes and the phenomenon of cooperative target regulation is identified as frequent mechanism of gene regulation in humans.

On-line HDF represents a major technical development in the delivery of hemodialysis therapy: It combines the properties of increased diffusion available in current high-flux membranes with convective removal of between 6 and 30 liters per treatment and requires the use of ultrapure water and online filtration of replacement fluid. On-line HDF has been successfully introduced in Europe and Asia and is routinely prescribed for dialysis patients in these regions.The book at hand summarizes the history and achievements of on-line HDF in four parts: A report of the technological development in both machine and fiber/dialyzer is followed by a description of the challenges encountered in the evolution of on-line HDF, collecting the accounts of clinical key opinion leaders who had been involved in its early application. The third part presents a comprehensive review of the clinical results achieved with on-line HDF from its inception to the present times, in which it represents the clinical golden standard. Map-making is a fundamental tool for developing geological knowledge. It involves data collection and interpretation and has its roots in the earliest discoveries in Earth science. It is the starting point for stratigraphic and structural interpretations, metamorphic facies, geochronology and modelling studies – and underpins civil engineering. From the beginning, geological mapping rapidly evolved into far more than being a simple spatial catalogue of observable rock types and landforms on the Earth’s land-surface: deductive reasoning allows this knowledge to infer subsurface Earth structure. However, the same approaches have also been down-scaled to deduce processes on the grain-scale; or up-scaled to look out to extraterrestrial objects. This Special Publication draws together these strands, crossing geoscience disciplines and observation scales to celebrate geological mapping, its historical importance and future directions, and its use in applied geology together with developing knowledge of Earth and planetary evolution and processes.
