J. Watts de Peyster Miscellaneous Papers
Items found in a set of 8 volumes of Robert Tomes's The battles of America by sea and land (New York: Virtue and Company, [1859]; E178 .T65 1859 v. 1-8 quarto SCDIRB) which formerly belonged to J. Watts de Peyster. The items include: 1. a handwritten address, perhaps excised from an envelope, for General J. Watts de Peyster, Tivoli P.O., Dutchess Co. New York, with "Stoney Point" also written vertically along the left side, and includes a blue one-cent U.S. postage stamp of Benjamin Franklin trimmed along the right and lower edges (verso blank); 2. A handwritten note cut from a larger document referring to George Custer and a wintertime military expedition (2 pages); 3. a handwritten list (1 page) of towns in North and South Carolina with dates of U.S. Revolutionary War battles fought nearby, indexed to page numbers from Robert Tomes's set or other publications; 4. a partial printed United States one-cent postal card, canceled, addressed to Gen. de Peyster with faint writing on the verso

John Watts de Peyster
John Watts de Peyster (1821-1907) was born in New York City, the son of Frederic de Peyster and Mary Justina Watts. He married Estelle Livingston, daughter of John Swift Livingston and Anna Maria Thompson.
