Programming Language Implementation and Logic Programming

This volume consists of the papers accepted for presentation at the second international workshop on Programming Language Implementation and Logic Programming (PLILP '90) held in Linköping, Sweden, August 20-22, 1990. The aim of the workshop was to identify concepts and techniques used both in implementation of programming languages, regardless of the underlying programming paradigm, and in logic programming. The intention was to bring together researchers working in these fields. The volume includes 26 selected papers falling into two categories. Papers in the first category present certain ideas from the point of view of a particular class of programming languages, or even a particular language. The ideas presented seem to be applicable in other classes of languages. Papers in the second category directly address the problem of integration of various programming paradigms. The proceedings of the predecessor workshop PLILP '88, held in Orléans, France, May 16-18, 1988, are available as Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Vol. 348.

Structures in Concurrency Theory

This book is the proceedings of the Structures in Concurrency Theory workshop (STRICT) that was held from 11 th to l3th May 1995 in Berlin, Germany. It includes three invited contributions - by J. de Bakker, E. Best et aI, and E. R. Olderog and M. Schenke - and all papers which were submitted and accepted for presentation. Concurrency Theory deals with formal aspects of concurrent systems. It uses partly competing and partly complementary formalisms and structures. The aim of this workshop was to present and compare different formalisms and results in Concurrency Theory. STRICT was organized by the Humboldt-University Berlin and the ESPRIT Basic Research Working Group CALIBAN. Original papers had been sought from all scientists in the field of Concurrency Theory. The Programme Committee selected twenty contributions with various different topics, including Petri Nets, Process Algebras, Distributed Algorithms, Formal Semantics, and others. I am grateful to the Programme Committee and to the other referees for the careful evaluation of the submitted papers.

Automata Implementation

This book constitutes the strictly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the First International Workshop on Implementing Automata, WIA'96, held in London, Ontario, Canada, in August 1996. The volume presents 13 revised full papers together with an introduction and survey. The papers explore the use of software tools in formal language theory; various issues involved in the implementation of automata of all types are discussed. As the first book focusing on implementing automata, this collection of research papers defines the state of the art in the area. Generally speaking, the book advocates the practice of theory in computer science.

Honors Professor Antoni Mazurkiewicz, who during his long scientific career made fundamental contributions to theoretical computer science. This book includes contributions, which span a range of research areas, including the theory of programming, models of concurrent and distributed systems, and (de)composition methods for Pietri nets.

Handbook of Graph Grammars and Computing by Graph Transformation

Graph grammars originated in the late 60s, motivated by considerations about pattern recognition and compiler construction. Since then, the list of areas which have interacted with the development of graph grammars has grown quite impressively. Besides the aforementioned areas, it includes software specification and development, VLSI layout schemes, database design, modeling of concurrent systems, massively parallel computer architectures, logic programming, computer animation, developmental biology, music composition, visual languages, and many others. The area of graph grammars and graph transformations generalizes formal language theory based on strings and the theory of term rewriting ba...
