This book tracks the conceptual journeying of the term ‘transgender’ from the Global North—where it originated—along with the physical embodied journeying of transgender asylum seekers from countries within Africa to South Africa and considers the interrelationships between the two. The term 'transgender' transforms as it travels, taking on meaning in relation to bodies, national homes, institutional frameworks and imaginaries. This study centres on the experiences and narratives of people that can be usefully termed 'gender refugees', gathered through a series of life story interviews. It is the argument of this book that the departures, border crossings, arrivals and perceptions of...

Blood Brothers and Peace Pipes

"Nineteenth-century writer Karl May wrote novels about a fictionalized American Wild West that count among the most popular books of German literature to this day. His stories left an imprint on German culture, resulting in a variety of Wild West festivals featuring Native Americans and frontier settlers. These Karl May festivals are hosted widely throughout German-speaking countries today. This book, based on years of fieldwork observing and studying the festivals, plays, events, and groups that comprise this subculture, addresses a larger, timely issue: cultural transfer and appropriations. Are Germans dressing up in American Indian costumes paying tribute or offending the cultures they are representing? Avoiding simplistic answers, A. Dana Weber considers the complexity of cultural enactments as they relate both to the distinctly German phenomenon as well as to larger questions of cultural representations in American and European live performance traditions."

How We Love

A deeply personal exploration of love in all its forms from a feminist icon and bestselling author of Fight Like a Girl and Boys Will Be Boys. There is love in this place, just like there is love everywhere we care to look for it. There is beauty and there is hope and there is a boy and there is a mother and there is the past and there is the future but most importantly there is the now, and everything that exists between them that has got them from one moment to the next. The now is where we find the golden glow where, for the briefest of moments, the sky rips open and we see what it is we are made of. Tell me a story, he asked me. And so I began. Clementine Ford is a person who has loved d...

'With courage, compassion and generosity, Russell presents an intersectional history which honours single motherhood in all its complexity . . . Bold, revelatory and a joy to read' Elinor Cleghorn, author of Unwell Women 'Lucid and liberating' Eliane Glaser, author of Motherhood: A Manifesto Nearly a quarter of UK families with dependent children are single-parent families, and around 90% of single parents are women. Yet the single mother is still cast as victim or welfare queen, sexually irresponsible or too independent by half. Tracing a history through Victorian brothels, welfare rights activism and Black feminist traditions of othermothering, Ruby Russell tells a different story: of motherhood defined not by marriage or men, but as a nexus of solidarity beyond the patriarchal status quo. A personal quest for empowerment, Doing It All is also a fierce critique of the structures that leave single mums marginalised and exhausted - and a call to reclaim mothering as the life force of sustainable, connected and radically responsible communities. 'A riveting memoir-cum-cri-de-cœur-cum-manifesto for envisioning motherhood anew' Kirsten Swinth, author of Feminism's Forgotten Fight

What do aesthetics have to do with foreign language teaching and how can different art forms be integrated in foreign language teaching? These were the questions addressed in 2013 at the congress on “Aesthetic Learning in the Acquisition of German as a Foreign-Language. Literature – Theatre – Fine Arts – Music– Film.” at the UNAM (Universidad Autónoma de México) in Mexico City. The proposition commonly received was that the inclusion of sensory perception in processes of language acquisition enable an open and vivid approach to language and culture that lies beyond the often-predominant focus on competence. The volume at hand gathers in a well-balanced theory-practice proportion selected congress contributions and additional articles in which the different art forms with due regard to their own aesthetics are placed in the center of attention.
