1. The Idea behind the workshop was that of calling attention to the necessity of studying long term tendencies In economic growth. We believe that actual growth processes In capitalistic economies are not smooth phenomena and also that the evolution of the economy Is characterized by long term fluctuations as well as by trade cycles. It Is now common place to argue that this point of view was revived after 1973 In consequence of the economic difficulties experienced by Industrialized countries while It has a much older origin as Its roots can be pushed back at least to the Great Depression of the 1930's. Continuity and Change in Contemporary Capitalism
In the early 1980s, many observers, argued that powerful organized economic interests and social democratic parties created successful mixed economies promoting economic growth, full employment, and a modicum of social equality. The present book assembles scholars with formidable expertise in the study of advanced capitalist politics and political economy to reexamine this account from the vantage point of the second half of the 1990s. The authors find that the conventional wisdom no longer adequately reflects the political and economic realities. Advanced democracies have responded in path-dependent fashion to such novel challenges as technological change, intensifying international competition, new social conflict, and the erosion of established patterns of political mobilization. The book rejects, however, the currently widespread expectation that 'internationalization' makes all democracies converge on similar political and economic institutions and power relations. Diversity among capitalist democracies persists, though in a different fashion than in the 'Golden Age' of rapid economic growth after World War II.
The Other Macdonald Report
In 1982 the Macdonald Commission began its $20-million mission to find a consensus on Canada's future. The commission held hearings in 28 towns and cities, met with 700 concerned parties and assembled nearly 40,000 pages of testimony. In his Report, Commission chair Donald S. Macdonald announced Canada must make a "leap of faith" and embrace free trade with the U.S., apparently signalling the victory of a globalizing, corporate vision of the country's development. The Other Macdonald Report reopens the debate, presenting twenty key submissions to the Commission by organizations such as the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, the United Auto Workers, the National Action Committee on the Status of Women, the Canadian Mental Health Association and the National Farmers Union. Together these groups offer a vision of Canada where human needs take priority over capital and technology. The Other Macdonald Report offers alternatives to the corporate vision for Canada's future, alternatives forged during the vibrant free trade debates of the mid-1980s.
