This is the second in the series of annual reports linked to the UNEP Global Environment Outlook (GEO) which seeks to bridge the gap between science and policy by reviewing major global and regional environmental issues and policy developments during the year 2004. It also considers emerging issues from scientific research, focusing on the role of good environmental management in minimising the emergence of infectious diseases, and the impact of changes in ocean salinity. It then goes on to present the most recent available data on changes in the global environment, including new indicators on air quality, marine protected areas and ozone protection. The report also includes a feature focusing on the cross-cutting issues of gender, poverty and the environment; as well giving an overview of the Indian Ocean tsunami and its initial impact.
Africa Environment Outlook 2
This is the second comprehensive report on the state of Africa's environment, produced in collaboration with the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN). This report highlights the central position Africa's environment continues to play in sustainable development, as well as its potential to achieve progress in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals. The report profiles Africa's environmental resources as an asset for the continent's development. It highlights the opportunities presented by the region's natural resource base to support the continent's development. It also underscores the concept of sustainable livelihoods, and the importance of the environmental initiatives in supporting them.
Global Environment Outlook
The fourth report in the Global Environment Outlook series provides a comprehensive, scientifically credible, policy-relevant and up-to-date assessment of, and outlook for, the state of the global environment. Environment for development is the GEO-4 underlying theme and the report pays special attention to the role and impact of the environment on human well-being as well as to the use of environmental valuation as a tool for decision-making. GEO-4's 2007 publication date marks the half-way point for the Millennium Development Goals, The environment, as well as being the subject of MDG 7, is also a thread that runs through all the goals. SWOT Analysis and Evaluation of the GEO-3 Process from the Perspective of GEO Collaborating Centres
The purpose of this project was to examine the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) process from the point of view of the Collaborating Centres (CCs). It used SWOT analysis to elicit comments on: the performance of GEO as an assessment and reporting process; the performance of the CCs; UNEPs performance as the leader of GEO; the assessment and reporting methods used in the preparation of GEO-3; the CC network.
