The Dutch scholar Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857–1936) was one of the most famous orientalists of his time. He acquired early fame through his daring research in Mecca in 1884-85, masterly narrated in two books and accompanied by two portfolios of photographs. As an adviser to the colonial government in the Dutch East Indies from 1889 until 1906, he was on horseback during campaigns of “pacification” and published extensively on Indonesian cultures and languages. Meanwhile he successively married two Sundanese women with whom he had several children. In 1906 he became a professor in Leiden and promoted together with colleagues abroad the study of modern Islam, meant to be useful for...

The past fifteen years have seen Indonesia move away from authoritarianism to a thriving yet imperfect democracy. During this time, the archipelago attracted international attention as the most-populated Muslim-majority country in the world. As religious issues and actors have been increasingly taken into account in the analysis and conduct of international relations, particularly since the 9/11 events, Indonesia’s leaders have adapted to this new context. Taking a socio-historical perspective, this book examines the growing role of transnational Islamic Non-State Actors (NSAs) in post-authoritarian Indonesia and how it has affected the making of Indonesia’s foreign policy since the coun...

Shari'a Politics

One of the most important developments in Muslim politics in recent years has been the spread of movements calling for the implementation of Shari'a or Islamic law. Shari'a Politics maps the ideals and organization of these movements and examines their implications for the future of democracy, citizen rights, and gender relations in the Muslim world. These studies of eight Muslim-majority societies, and state-of-the-field reflections by leading experts, provide the first comparative investigation of movements for and against implementation of Shari'a. These essays reveal that the Muslim public's interest in Shari'a does not spring from an unchanging devotion to received religious tradition, but from an effort to respond to the central political and ethical questions of the day. -- Publisher description.

Sola Scriptura in Asia

The echo of Luther’s hammer resounds in Asia, five hundred years after the Wittenberg controversy: the cross is a flashpoint in China; Korea seeks ecclesiastical reform; the mystical union thrives in Laos; even Kant whispers in old Batavia. The diversity of ideas and influences of the Reformation is as broad and fascinating as the continent—resisting reduction to the postcolonial movement and demonstrating an affinity with Protestant foundations that somehow remains uniquely Asian. This volume brings together the reflections of Christian academics from the continent to offer a sample of the theological work that remains largely inaccessible to the broader scholarly community, with contributions in the fields of theology, biblical studies, philosophy, and Christian higher education. If the quincentennial of the Reformation has revealed anything, it is the inauguration of Asia as the locus of biblical and theological scholarship for the next five hundred years.
