Perspectives on Public Policy in Societal-Environmental Crises
This is an open access book. Histories we tell never emerge in a vacuum, and history as an academic discipline that studies the past is highly sensitive to the concerns of the present and the heated debates that can divide entire societies. But does the study of the past also have something to teach us about the future? Can history help us in coping with the planetary crisis we are now facing? By analyzing historical societies as complex adaptive systems, we contribute to contemporary thinking about societal-environmental interactions in policy and planning and consider how environmental and climatic changes, whether sudden high impact events or more subtle gradual changes, impacted human responses in the past. We ask how societal perceptions of such changes affect behavioral patterns and explanatory rationalities in premodernity, and whether a better historical understanding of these relationships can inform our response to contemporary problems of similar nature and magnitude, such as adapting to climate change.
Postmodernizing the Holocaust
Marta Tomczok presents all Polish postmodern novels about the Holocaust, starting with “The First Splendor” by Leopold Buczkowski and ending with “The Suspected Dybbuk” by Andrzej Bart. She also presents their rich relationships with selected foreign-language prose, which intensified especially at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The culmination of the entire trend is a discussion around two novels: “Tworki” by Marek Bieńczyk and “Fly Trap Factory” by Andrzej Bart, which reveals the aestheticizing and post-memorial profile of Polish postmodernization and its advantage over the historiosophical trend. This monograph is not only the first such collection of post-Holocaust postmodern novels, but also the first comprehensive study of postmodernism in the literature about the Holocaust, which, thanks to comparative analysis, tries to analyze and explain the circumstances of the appearance and later disappearance of this trend from cultural landscape of the world and Poland.

Refleksja teoretyczna nad historią oferowana przez Haydena White’a na ogół pojawia się w dyskusjach o statusie poznawczym rezultatów pracy historyka, relacji między sztuką a historiografią i moralnych zobowiązaniach badaczy dziejów. Prezentowana książka skupia się za zaproponowanym przez amerykańskiego historyka opisie związków łączących pisarstwo historyczne i politykę. Podstawą myślenia White’a jest założenie o istnieniu ścisłej korelacji między poetyką a polityką pisarstwa historycznego. To, jak wypowiadamy się o przeszłości, określa nasz stosunek do teraźniejszości i nasze oczekiwania wobec przyszłości. Kształtuje bowiem sposoby postrzegania rzeczywistości, zmieniając lub zachowując ramy myślenia i działania.
