Counteracting Urban Heat Island Effects in a Global Climate Change Scenario
Urban heat islands are a new type of microclimatic phenomenon that causes a significant increase in the temperature of cities compared to surrounding areas. The phenomenon has been enforced by the current trend towards climate change. Although experts consider urban heat islands an urgent European Union public health concern, there are too few policies that address it. The EU carried out a project to learn more about this phenomenon through pilot initiatives. The pilots included feasibility studies and strategies for appropriately altering planning rules and governance to tackle the problem of urban heat islands. The pilots were carried out in eight metropolitan areas: Bologna/Modena, Budapest, Ljubljana, Lodz, Prague, Stuttgart, Venice/Padova, and Vienna. The feasibility studies carried out in these pilot areas focused on the specific morphology of EU urban areas, which are often characterised by the presence of historical old towns.
Polish Flows
The contributors attempt to describe Polish rivers and lakes as a nexus of narratives about nature culture, pointing out those elements of the story around which scientific, political, media, social and ecological narratives are created. All of them influence the shape of reflection on the water ecosystem and its function in Polish education. The authors recreate old and contemporary Polish mythmaking narratives about Polish rivers and lakes and, by proposing a critical reading of them, try to develop new educational practices that would take into account the 21st century conditions related to the climate catastrophe. The context related to the crisis also opens up thinking about rivers to other categories (cooperation, solidarity, activism) than those that have been applicable in Polish education so far (national symbolism, utility).
Cell/Tissue Injury and Cytoprotection/Organoprotection in the Gastrointestinal Tract
Up-to-date reviews on the mechanisms of gastrointestinal injury and protection In recent years, there have been significant advances both in understanding the mechanisms involved in gastrointestinal mucosal injury and protection, as well as in the development of successful strategies for prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal injury. Nevertheless, many people worldwide still suffer from gastrointestinal damage. This book contains contributions by an international panel of researchers in the form of up-to-date reviews on the mechanisms of gastrointestinal injury and protection. These are complemented by papers discussing how these new findings about cell/tissue injury and cytoprotection/organoprotection can be applied to the prevention and treatment of tissue damage in the gastrointestinal tract. Moreover, the publication includes a special chapter on Andre Robert, who has discovered the phenomenon of gastric cytoprotection. This publication will be of great interest for both basic and clinical researchers in gastroenterology and pharmacology, reviewing the advances made so far and pointing towards future developments.

Potencjał leczniczy klimatu Polski
Pracownicy Zakładu Geoekologii i Klimatologii IGiPZ PAN dokonali oceny klimatu całej Polski w kontekście lecznictwa klimatycznego. W opracowaniu uwzględniono nowe metody badawcze oraz nowe zagadnienia ujęte w opracowaniach bioklimatu, tj. kwestie długotrwałości niekorzystnych warunków pogodowych (fal upałów, zimna, okresów parnych) czy kontrastowości warunków bioklimatycznych pomiędzy stałym miejscem zamieszkania a miejscem leczenia lub wypoczynku. Zwrócono też uwagę na kwestię zróżnicowania topoklimatycznego miejscowości, której klimat jest lub może być wykorzystywany w lecznictwie, a także na sposoby prezentacji lokalnych warunków klimatycznych na mapach.
