The free offer of the gospel has been a matter of significant debate within Reformed theology. However, despite this controversy, Reformed theologians such as James Durham preached a gospel offer which was a sincere and free invitation from God to all, to embrace Jesus Christ as Saviour. This gospel offer expressed God's grace and goodness to all. Donald MacLean argues that Durham's doctrinal position is representative of the Westminster Standards and embraced by his contemporaries and evidenced by the later disputes concerning the meaning of the teaching of the Westminster Confession of Faith.
Volume 1: Sixty-One Sermons, includes a recent transcription from manuscript of one of Durham's most important sermons preached at the beginning of the Protester-Resolutioner schism in Scotland. Volume 2: Christ crucified: or, The Marrow of the Gospel in 72 Sermons on Isaiah 53 presents one of the best commentaries ever written on Christ's person and in redemption.
This book deals with the vital matter of defining authentic personal faith and the essence of the Christian life. It forms a practical application of the truths contained within the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Catechisms. It is a sure guide in relation to the matters of salvation and the reader may return to it regularly with great benefit. To grow in both appreciation and appropriation of it is to grow in 'the life and marrow of religion'.
