Arianists denied Jesus was of the same substance as God, & held that he was only the highest creature of God & that Mary was mother of Christ, not mother of God. Nestorius insisted on a two-person & two-nature concept of Jesus & that Christ should not be called mother of God. Apollinaris held that two complete & contrasting natures (divine & human) in Jesus could not exist. There would be two beings, making it impossible for Christ to save humanity, because the human being in Christ might sin. Apollinaris therefore denied Jesus both humanity & divinity. Eutyches, the "Father of Monophysitism", & others insisted on a Jesus of one nature, the Divine Christ. The Monothelete sect supported a concept proposed by Byzantine Emperor Heraclius to compromise Monotheletism: that Jesus had only one person & one nature, which was divine. Part of the orthodox answer to these heresies is that from the first moment, Christ's human nature existed as the human nature of the Word, never as a single independently existing nature, & that God & man is one Christ, one person in two natures.

It explores the ways in which Africans have interacted with the ancient mythological sub-strata of both western and African ideas of Judaism."--Résumé de l'éditeur.
