Mahler's Fourth Symphony

Following the earlier volumes in the Studies in Musical Genesis and Structure series, Mahler's Fourth Symphony is a study of origins of one of Mahler's most popular and accessible works. James Zychowicz examines how the composition evolved from the earliest ideas to the finished score, and in doing so sheds new light on Mahler's working process.

Die drei Pintos, Part 2

After completing Der Freischütz, Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) planned to compose as its comic counterpart Die drei Pintos, but he left the work unfinished at his death. Other composers, including Giacomo Meyerbeer, have attempted to complete the opera, but for various reasons none succeeded. Around the time of Weber's centennial, though, Weber's grandson showed the sketches to Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), who completed the score and conducted the premiere in 1888. Weber left sketches for only the first act of three acts, and Mahler at first planned a performing version with the final act spoken. Mahler reconsidered this strategy and decided to complete the score in all three acts. In the ...

The Cambridge Companion to the Lied

Beginning several generations before Schubert, the Lied first appears as domestic entertainment. In the century that follows it becomes one of the primary modes of music-making. By the time German song comes to its presumed conclusion with Richard Strauss's 1948 Vier letzte Lieder, this rich repertoire has moved beyond the home and keyboard accompaniment to the symphony hall. This is a 2004 introductory chronicle of this fascinating genre. In essays by eminent scholars, this Companion places the Lied in its full context - at once musical, literary, and cultural - with chapters devoted to focal composers as well as important issues, such as the way in which the Lied influenced other musical genres, its use as a musical commodity, and issues of performance. The volume is framed by a detailed chronology of German music and poetry from the late 1730s to the present and also contains a comprehensive bibliography.

Mahler's Seventh Symphony

Gustav Mahler's Seventh Symphony stands out as one of the most provocative symphonic statements of the early twentieth century. Throughout its performance history, it has often been heard as "existing in the shadow" of the Sixth Symphony or as "too reminiscent" of Richard Wagner's opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Anna Stoll Knecht's Mahler's Seventh Symphony offers a new interpretation of the Seventh based on a detailed study of Mahler's compositional materials and a close reading of the finished work. With a focus on sketches previously considered as "discarded," Stoll Knecht exposes unexpected connections between the Seventh and both the Sixth and Meistersinger, confirming that Mahle...

German Expressionism in the Audiovisual Culture / Der deutsche Expressionismus in den Audiovisuellen Medien
