Bel Canto

In this well documented and highly readable book, James Stark provides a history of vocal pedagogy from the beginning of the bel canto tradition of solo singing in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries to the present. Using a nineteenth-century treatise by Manuel Garcia as his point of reference, Stark analyses the many sources that discuss singing techniques and selects a number of primary vocal 'problems' for detailed investigation. He also presents data from a series of laboratory experiments carried out to demonstrate the techniques of bel canto. The discussion deals extensively with such topics as the emergence of virtuoso singing, the castrato phenomenon, national differences in singing styles, controversies regarding the perennial decline in the art of singing, and the so-called secrets of bel canto. Stark offers a new definition of bel canto which reconciles historical and scientific descriptions of good singing. His is a refreshing and profound discussion of issues important to all singers and voice teachers.

The mid-twentieth century was a pivotal time in American history. Through the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, our nation saw creeping changes that led to social upheaval. In his new short story collection, Love in the Time of Cholesterol, James Stark looks back on these decades and how their events still affect people today. Each story presents unique characters and scenarios, but all look at the widely varying manifestations of love. At his wife's urging, a man explores the physical and emotional side effects of taking the "little blue pill." A wife seeks an emotional connection with her husband through togetherness activities, but when she gives up and starts her own hobbies, she discovers his secrets. A traumatized Vietnam veteran finally seeks anger-management therapy. A naïve American filmmaker gets into trouble while exploring behind the Iron Curtain. When a student's curiosity forces a college professor to open up about his Vietnam War experience, long-suppressed memories lead to self-discovery. These and other introspective tales make for a thought-provoking look back at challenging, meaningful times and their lingering effects on people and relationships.

Passport to Hell

Passport to Hell is the story of James Douglas Stark—Starkie—and his war. Journalist and novelist Robin Hyde came across Starkie while reporting in Mt Eden Gaol in the 1930s and immediately knew she had to write his 'queer true terrible story'. The result was greeted by John A. Lee, war veteran, author and politician, as 'the most important New Zealand war book yet published'. Born in Southland and finding himself in early trouble with the law, the young Starkie tricked his way into a draft in 1914 by means of a subterfuge involving whisky and tea. In his subsequent chequered career in Egypt, Gallipoli, Armentières, the Somme, Ypres, he showed himself 'a soldier and not a soldier', with...
