War and Worship concerns textile deposits from the bog sites of Thorsberg in Germany and Nydam, Vimose and Illerup Ådal in Denmark. All four sites are well-known for containing a substantial amount of archaeological materials, particularly weapons, but they also contain, as integral parts of the weapon deposits, a smaller number of preserved textiles, which nevertheless constitute outstanding assemblages. With the exception of Thorsberg, publications dealing particularly with textiles from weapon deposits are almost non-existent. Fitful Histories and Unruly Publics re-examines the relationship between Eurasia’s past and its present by interrogating the social construction of time and the archaeological production of culture. Traditionally, archaeological research in Eurasia has focused on assembling normative descriptions of monolithic cultures that endure for millennia, largely immune to the forces of historical change. The papers in this volume seek to document forces of difference and contestation in the past that were produced in the perceptible engagements of peoples, things, and places. The research gathered here convincingly demonstrates that these forces made social life in ancient Eurasia rather more fitful and its publics considerably more unruly than archaeological research has traditionally allowed. Der Band enthält 17 Beiträge von Archäologen, Historikern und Sprachwissenschaftlern, die im Oktober 2006 an der Universität Jena zu einem interdisziplinären Kolloquium zusammenkamen, um den Forschungsstand ihrer jeweiligen Disziplin zur frühen thüringischen Geschichte zu vergleichen. Dabei wurde deutlich, dass die Erkenntnisse der Historiker und Archäologen in vielerlei Hinsicht nicht miteinander vereinbar sind: Die materiellen Hinterlassenschaften, die in Thüringen gefunden wurden, lassen sich nicht ohne Weiteres den frühen Thüringern der Schriftquellen zuordnen.

Core, Periphery, Frontier - Spatial Patterns of Power
Centre' and 'periphery', two notions essential in the discourse of power and domination, tend to be reificated as a static, inert relation of an active, dominating centre on one side with an acquiescent, docile periphery on the other. Far before a 'spatial turn' came into vogue, philosophers like Immanuel Kant or sociologists such as Georg Simmel pointed out that space is not an entity existing besides human perceptiveness respectively without any relation to society. In this book specialists in the history of various premodern societies are discussing manifold kinds of spatial differentiations and within that the role of a seemingly ubiquitous dichotomy between centre/core and periphery/frontier. The researches cover a vast region spanning from Central Europe in the West to Japan in the Farthest East and Egypt in the South.
