Happiness is a Fat Gecko

If you’re looking for a book fluctuating from the mundane to the serious, from the frivolous to the tragic, as told by an American doctor serving in a “bush” hospital in Tanzania, this one is for you. Medical situations are depicted, but it’s much more than medical. It deals candidly with the cultural observations and experiences of the author in his beloved Third World hospital, village, and country. You’ll find the chapters vary from interesting, amazing, humorous, to sometimes hardly believable. The contrast with your First World is stark at times – not better or worse, right or wrong, just different. Laugh and cry with Dr. Black and his wife as you vicariously join them on their journey of service in Tanzania.

Daughters of Riga

As World War II sweeps over Europe, nine-year-old Danielle (“Dani”) Loesseps escapes from Latvia under the protection of the Dutch consul. Her Jewish mother, the consul’s secretary, is tragically left behind at the end of a momentous year which sees a heroic scheme to save refugees from the Nazis, the blossoming of a secret love, and an unhappy woman’s revenge. The consul’s young daughter Berta Vandercam also grows up in the shadow of the war and strives to understand why her father never speaks about their time in Riga. Memories of the Riga consulate and questions about what happened there haunt the survivors as they remake their lives in the postwar world.

The Impact of Systems Medicine on Human Health and Disease

Complex disorders including obesity, diabetes, fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease and cancer are results from a combination of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors. The prevalence of such disorders has increased dramatically in the last two decades and there is an urgent need for the development of new prognostic tools for the treatment of such diseases. However, this requires a deep understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in the occurrence of the diseases. With the advances in high throughput technologies, biological components of cells can be measured with a very high resolution and these data can be used for investigating whole systems properties usi...

Cardiac Pacemakers

Clinical usage of artificial pacing dates back to 1958, when the battery powered cardiac pacemakers became available. Modern implantable pacemakers are the complicated electronic devices operating 10 years continuously without battery exchange. Though the development of devices is not a primary topic of the book, certain efforts towards developing of biologic pacemakers through tissue engineering and studying of cell synchronization are discussed. The main attention is paid to implementations of pacemakers in different medical situations oriented towards widening the clinical indications for implanting the cardiac pacemakers. New methods and devices in cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) have received particular attention. Placing of pacing electrodes has been treated soundly. Furthermore, emerging of complexities and complications in new clinical situations and other safety problems have been discussed thoroughly. The authors have derived the used information from their own clinical practice and experiences of their medical colleagues. These and other pragmatic features can be acknowledged as the most valuable asset of the book.

Nucleic acids are the fundamental building blocks of DNA and RNA and are found in virtually every living cell. Molecular biology is a branch of science that studies the physicochemical properties of molecules in a cell, including nucleic acids, proteins, and enzymes.Increased understanding of nucleic acids and their role in molecular biology will further many of the biological sciences including genetics, biochemistry, and cell biology.Progress in Nucleic Acid Research and Molecular Biology provides a forum for discussion of new discoveries, approaches, and ideas in molecular biology. It contains contributions from leaders in their fields and abundant references. - Provides a forum for discussion of new discoveries, approaches, and ideas in molecular biology - Includes contributions from leaders in the field - Contains abundant references
