Luxury is as old as humankind and has sparked multiple debates throughout of history. In today’s consumer society, luxury brands have become aspirational symbols. Yet, to date, a comprehensive overview of the different perspectives that have shaped the discourses about luxury is missing. Hannes Gurzki provides a broad overview of luxury research, highlights and details important perspectives on luxury, and derives practical guidelines for managers based on research. Thereby the author combines insights from different disciplines, such as philosophy, sociology, psychology, anthropology, cultural studies, economics or management, to broaden and deepen our understanding of luxury and its creation principles.
In his research, Sören Köcher provides valuable insights on the paradoxical effects of the magnitude of a loyalty program medium—i.e. the sheer number of points, miles, or stamps credited for every purchase and required for reward redemption—on the central consumer decisions in loyalty program memberships. In sum, the results of twelve empirical studies reveal that high magnitude currencies improve the attractiveness of medium collection but entail reluctant medium spending behavior. These findings provide important implications for a more efficient usage of loyalty programs in business practices. In addition, this dissertation discovers a violation of one of the most fundamental assumptions of rational choice theory and thus contributes to a better understanding of when and why people deviate from rational decision-making.
Christian Lucas investigates the effectiveness of sports sponsorships. Two empirical studies are conducted, based on a comprehensive literature review. Implications from both studies are derived that can guide sponsorship managers in their daily business. Successful sports marketing execution is more than purchasing a 30-second spot or signage in a stadium: It is to improve and enhance customer experience to be able to engage in a conversation with them. The first study analyses activation means by conducting a multi-level field study combining data about the sponsorship instruments of Bundesliga sponsors with fan perceptions. The second study examines international differences in sponsorship effectiveness of Formula One sponsors.
