The volume deals with historical ontology from several angles: the historicity of understanding (Françoise Dastur, Arbogast Schmitt, Samuel Weber), the limits of making (Emil Angehrn, Nicholas Davey, Jan-Ivar Lindén) and the future of memory (Jayne Svenungsson, Christoph Türcke, Bernhard Waldenfels).
Platonic love is a concept that has profoundly shaped Western literature, philosophy and intellectual history for centuries. First developed in the Symposium and the Phaedrus, it was taken up by subsequent thinkers in antiquity, entered the theological debates of the Middle Ages, and played a key role in the reception of Neoplatonism and the etiquette of romantic relationships during the Italian Renaissance. In this wide-ranging reference work, a leading team of international specialists examines the Platonic distinction between higher and lower forms of eros, the role of the higher form in the ascent of the soul and the concept of Beauty. They also treat the possibilities for friendship and interpersonal love in a Platonic framework, as well as the relationship between love, rhetoric and wisdom. Subsequent developments are explored in Plutarch, Plotinus, Augustine, Pseudo-Dionysius, Eriugena, Aquinas, Ficino, della Mirandola, Castiglione and the contra amorem tradition.

The latest volume of Yale French Studies addresses French-inspired theoretical and philosophical concerns centered on animals and animality. Contributors from France, the United Kingdom, and North America discuss animal-related topics in the French philosophical and literary tradition, offering a wide range of perspectives on animals, ethics, and the future of animal studies. Essays question the reducibility of animal lives to rights discourse on the one hand and scientific empiricisms on the other, and examine whether and how the advent of the posthuman will affect the standing and the future of the nonhuman animal.
English summary: This yearbook represents a broad basis of one of the main trends in present-day philosophy with its counterparts in other sectors of the humanities. Hermeneutics sees itself as a successor to German Idealism and to the philosophy which originated in Germany and Europe during the 19th and the 20th century. In a broad sense, hermeneutics can be seen here as a counterbalance to analytical philosophy. Particular emphasis is also placed on the reference to antiquity as the origin of European philosophy. German description: Dieses Jahrbuch reprasentiert eine Hauptstromung der gegenwartigen Philosophie mit ihren Entsprechungen in den Wissenschaften. Die philosophische Beschaftigung...
