Hamburg Climate Futures Outlook 2024

Many countries, communities, and social actors around the world are struggling to cope with the impacts of climate change. Adapting to climate change in a sustainable manner involves a huge collective effort and is barely happening. How can sustainable climate change adaptation become plausible? The Hamburg Climate Futures Outlook 2024 provides a unique systematic and global assessment of the context conditions for sustainable climate change adaptation, evaluating the social dynamics of deep decarbonization and the physical dynamics in regional climate variability and extremes. Through nine case studies across the globe, the assessment provides insights into key barriers and opportunities for sustainable climate change adaptation.

“Jewish, Gay and Proud”

This publication examines the foundation and institutional integration of the first gay-lesbian synagogue Beth Chayim Chadashim, which was founded in Los Angeles in 1972. As early as June 1974, the synagogue was admitted to the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, the umbrella organization of the Reform congregations in the United States. Previously, the potential acceptance of a congregation by and for homosexual Jews triggered an intense and broad debate within Reform Judaism. The work asks how it was possible to successfully establish a gay-lesbian synagogue at a time when homosexual acts were considered unnatural and contrary to tradition by almost the entire Jewish community. The sta...

Journey to Joy

From learning how to jump obstacles on horseback in the Modern Pentathlon to competing in triathlons in France, this is an action-packed autobiography of a young South African athlete sharing her dream of becoming a world champion. A dream which seemed impossible during the sports boycott against apartheid. Dr Sibis Mouton speaks to us from the heart as she ranges from her childhood, her family, to her travels around the world and her internal journeys, heart-aches and victories. Life experiences, like swimming with the dolphins in the Miami Keys or photographing the famous Masai Mara migration in Kenya, are given deeper spiritual significance and take us on a mystical journey to discover the meaning and purpose of life. This is an uplifting and inspiring story that should convince the reader that life is indeed a miracle to be enjoyed and treasured.

KES AND TELL. The Untold Truth About King Edward VII School.

King Edward VII School, 1965 - 1970, in Apartheid Johannesburg was a stick-wielding, traditional boys school of its times. But the Establishment did not count on a cohort that displayed an over-developed spirit of rebellion. In this unofficial, unauthorized and somewhat scandalous account, over 70 schoolmates used the Covid-19 lockdown to describe their complicated relationship with the institution that helped shape their lives over the last 50 years. Anyone who has ever reflected on their own schooldays will enjoy the humour and escapades of a group determined to resist the rules and constraints of a very rigid society.

The Humanisation of Global Politics

  • Categories: Law

This book observes a growing humanisation of global politics relating to the appearance of individual human beings in discourses of global politics. It identifies a mismatch concerning International Relations theory and International Law and the study of the humanisation of global politics. To overcome this mismatch, Sassan Gholiagha proposes a novel theoretical framework based on feminist and constructivist International Relations theory and non-statist theories of International Law scholarship. The book applies this interdisciplinary framework together with an interpretative analytical framework to three cases: the discourse on prosecution, studying international criminal law and the work of the International Criminal Court; the discourse on protection, focusing on the Responsibility to Protect; and the use of drones in targeted killing operations. Drawing on these case studies and the frameworks, the book identifies how individual human beings as participants in global politics position themselves and are positioned by others in these various discourses.
