Last Post

Last Post has a double life; it both sounds for the gallant fallen and recalls what spurred freelance journalists, in all those yesterdays before e-mail, to get their copy in the pillar-box by deadline time. Frederic Raphael's compendium, written in the lively equivalent of the French epistolary second person singular, is a rare mixture of loud salutes, occasional raspberries and affectionate farewells. Its intimacy delivers frankness that formal biography, however plumped with proper sources, seldom achieves. To John Schlesinger, '"Fuck 'em all dear," you used to say. And God knows, you did your best.'; Ludwig Wittgenstein saying 'What do you know about philosophy, Russell, what have you ev...

Ruby's New Coat begins in London when, for one night only, Ruby Biggs forgets she is engaged to be married. A V2 rocket hits a London pub and Ruby's life is turned upside down in more ways than one, as she is tumbled into a doorway and dragged into the bowels of Selfridges by a mysterious and enigmatic stranger. Passion erupts and a connection is made. Her rescuer, Loukas, is from Crete and has to return, where he discovers terrible atrocities committed by both the Germans and the Cretans against each other. Meanwhile, Ruby is in trouble, even more so after her fiancé's sister reveals a shocking secret. When her father returns from the war to discover his daughter has been "carrying on with a foreigner," Ruby has no choice but to leave England. She throws caution to the wind and moves to Crete where she begins a new life. Combining fiction with historical fact, this romantic tale has twists and turns and heals scars spanning ten years of conflict.

UW Archives holds up to three copies of each volume of the yearbook from its initial publication in 1884 to its final publication in 2014 (129 volumes). The publication of the yearbook did not become annual until 1887, as such there are no yearbooks for 1885 or 1886. The only other interruption in yearbooks was for the years 1973 and 1974. There are still yearbooks from these years, but they were published by the Wisconsin Alumni Association rather than the student body, as such they are spare, consisting mostly of portraits of students. UW Archives currently holds at least one copy of every published volume. The 1st copy of each volume is held onsite at UW Archives while the second and third copies, where they exist, are held offsite.

After being acquitted of eight grisly murders by reason of insanity, Hanford Wells was committed to the Hickory Hollow Forensic Psychiatric Center, from which he soon escaped. When dental records proved that the battered body discovered in the woods was that of his missing patient, forensic psychiatrist, Llewellyn Price, breathed a sigh of relief. Now, a year later, a girl "s skeleton is discovered near Wells " home town and carved into her skull are a line of symbols strikingly similar to those Wells doodled before his escape. Dr. Price has been asked to help the authorities profile the killer, a job he accepts amidst growing fears that Hanford Wells may not be dead after all, and, if he "s not, Price knows that this girl was not the madman "s first victim and that she certainly will not be his last.
