All her life, Jane believes she is small-town ordinary. . . until she isn't. Some people brand her a witch because of the cat while others believe she has a demon. Her family thinks she's ready for the nursing home, and the down-and-out reporter assumes she's a fake. But nobody, including Jane, can figure out how she does it: heal the sick. All the sick. All the time. Is it a gift of God? The Church is divided. Then, everything erupts when the foreigners arrive along with the government people and the scientists. Will Jane become a pawn or save herself? Sister Jane is a story that combines realism, considerations of the supernatural, and the conflicts and conundrums that are set loose by Jane's ability to heal. Author Irmgarde Brown creates characters that hold the reader's interest because they evoke an emotional response that registers as real. This is fiction that contains depth and serious questions. However, answers are left open to interpretation, and faith is never presented as a "one size fits all" experience of the human spirit. The plot begins on a strong note, and continues to build to an ending that is both unexpected and intriguing.

Born and raised in Australia, Martha longs to return to Nadwodom, in a country called Czawa, where her parents and family grew up. As she stumbles upon the works of Marion Porter, an Australian photographer who once photographed the countryside in Czawa, Martha's own journey to her family's homeland begins to unfurl. There, she meets her cousin, Klara, and the two discover an uncanny relationship in which each sees herself in the other. Born and raised in Nadwodom, Klara helps Martha discover the multi-layered pattern that connects her present world and the history of a city that remains deep in the shadows of their family's memories. In moving across time and borders, Martha gradually recog...

Lancelot 'Capability' Brown

Lancelot Brown changed the face of eighteenth-century England, designing country estates and mansions, moving hills and making flowing lakes and serpentine rivers, a magical world of green. This English landscape style spread across Europe and the world. At home, it proved so pleasing that Brown's influence moved into the lowland landscape at large, and into landscape painting. He stands behind our vision, and fantasy, of rural England. In this vivid, lively biography, based on detailed research, Jane Brown paints an unforgettable picture of the man, his work, his happy domestic life, and his crowded world. She follows the jovial yet elusive Mr Brown from his childhood and apprenticeship in ...
