A Level Playing Field
In this timely work, Jane Fowler Morse reviews the history of school finance litigation in the United States and then examines recent legal and political struggles to obtain equitable school funding in New York, Vermont, and Ontario. These three places have employed strikingly different strategies to address this issue, and Morse analyzes lessons learned at each that will benefit both public officials and citizens interested in seeking reform elsewhere. Drawing on writers from Aristotle to Cass Sunstein and Martin Luther King Jr., she also explores the concepts of social justice and equity, highlighting the connections between racism, poverty, and school funding. This edited collection considers Greek American formal and informal educational efforts, institutions, and programs, broadly conceived, as they evolved over time throughout the United States. The authors examine the social, political, and historical preconditions for the transfer of “new education” theory and practices in each period, place, and school, along with the networks of ideas and experts that supported this. John Dewey at 150
The sesquicentennial of the birth of John Dewey is in 2009. In recognition of this occasion, John Dewey at One Hundred-Fifty: Reflections for a New Century, with contributors drawn from the members of the John Dewey Society, will be published as both a journal issue and a book. The papers will appear as an issue of the Society's journal, Education and Culture, in late fall 2009, and as a book by Purdue University Press.
