Originally published in 1983 the first edition rapidly established itself as a core student text. Now fully revised and up-dated it remains the only book to address the rationale, process, techniques and methodologies specific to the study of dance history. For the main body of the text which covers historical studies of dance in its traditional and performance contexts, the editors have brought together a team of internationally known dance historians. Roger Copeland and Deborah Jowitt each take a controversial look at the modern American dance. Kenneth Archer and Millicent Hodson explain the processes they use when reconstructing 'lost' ballets, and Theresa Buckland and Georgina Gore write on traditional dance in England and West Africa respectively. With other contributions on social dance, ballet, early European modern dance and feminist perspectives on dance history this book offers a multitude of starting points for studying dance history as well as presenting examples of dance writing at its very best. Dance History will be an essential purchase for all students of dance.

Dance on Screen is a comprehensive introduction to the rich diversity of screen dance genres. It provides a contextual overview of dance in the screen media and analyzes a selection of case studies from the popular dance imagery of music video and Hollywood, through to experimental art dance. The focus then turns to video dance, dance originally choreographed for the camera. Video dance can be seen as a hybrid in which the theoretical and aesthetic boundaries of dance and television are traversed and disrupted. This new paperback edition includes a new Preface by the author covering key developments since the hardback edition was published in 2001.

Dancing Texts

This book takes an innovative approach to dance analysis, looking at issues in the interpretation and reading of dances. Building on Janet Adshead-Lansdale's Dance Analysis: Theory and Practice (1988), Dancing Texts reshapes recent developments in post-structuralist and literary theory to illuminate close readings of dances. Following a thorough introduction to the theoretical basis of intertextuality in relation to dance, the book offers a number of fully worked out examples of dance analysis, with subjects spanning the twentieth century and ranging from video-dance to ballet. The examples chosen include classical, modern and postmodern styles of theatre dance and also explore relations with music, film, architecture, language, popular culture and ethnicity. The shifting and fluid interpretations that emerge illustrate the processes of intertextuality itself, opening up a new arena for dance analysis and criticism. The editor, Janet Adshead-Lansdale, is forrmer Professor of Dance Studies and Head of the School of Performing Arts at the University of Surrey, and the authors are choreographers, researchers, and university lecturers working in dance analysis.

The Body, Dance and Cultural Theory

This book takes its point of departure from the overwhelming interest in theories of the body and performativity in sociology and cultural studies in recent years. It explores a variety of ways of looking at dance as a social and artistic (bodily) practice as a means of generating insights into the politics of identity and difference as they are situated and traced through representations of the body and bodily practices. These issues are addressed through a series of case studies.

This book contains readings of American, British and European postmodern dances informed by feminist, postcolonialist, queer and poststructuralist theories. It explores the roles dance and space play in constructing subjectivity. By focusing on site-specific dance, the mutual construction of bodies and spaces, body-space interfaces and 'in-between spaces', the dances and dance films are read 'against the grain' to reveal their potential for troubling conventional notions of subjectivity associated with a white, Western, heterosexual able-bodied, male norm.
