If These Walls Could Talk explores the theological and social significance of Philadelphias community muralism movement, a groundswell of public art that is transforming the City of Brotherly Love into the Mural Capital of the World. It calls attention to the narratives behind some of the citys 2,800 wall-sized canvasesin ghettos and on schools, on mosques and in jails, in courthouses and along overpassesin order to illustrate the way in which the arts can help us to travel the emotional, intellectual, and relational distance necessary to arrive at creative responses to the seemingly inescapable problems of urban poverty.
From the late nineteenth century onward, Black Americans looked to ancient Egypt as evidence of a preeminent ancient culture from the African continent. Flight into Egypt traces ancient Egypt’s influence on artists, from Edmonia Lewis’s sculpture The Death of Cleopatra (1876) to the efflorescence of Afrocentric visual art during the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and artistic tendencies of the ensuing decades. This volume explores how Black artists, writers, and musicians—and modern and contemporary Egyptian artists—have employed ancient Egyptian imagery to craft a unifying identity. Authors bring to light the overlooked contributions of Black scholars to the study of ancient Egypt, while statements by contemporary Black and Egyptian artists illuminate ancient Egypt’s continued hold on the creative imagination.
This book adopts a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective to investigate the experimental bodies of works produced by African, African American, African Caribbean and Black British artists in order to excavate and theorise the formal and thematic contours of an African Diasporic visual arts tradition.
Chicanismo, the idea of what it means to be Chicano, was born in the 1970s, when grassroots activists, academics, and artists joined forces in the civil rights movimiento that spread new ideas about Mexican American history and identity. The community murals those artists painted in the barrios of East Los Angeles were a powerful part of that cultural vitality, and these artworks have been an important feature of LA culture ever since. This book offers detailed analyses of individual East LA murals, sets them in social context, and explains how they were produced. The authors, leading experts on mural art, use a distinctive methodology, analyzing the art from aesthetic, political, and cultural perspectives to show how murals and graffiti reflected and influenced the Chicano civil rights movement. Kunzle outlines the historical conditions in Nicaragua that gave rise to the Revolution and to the murals, from the era of Sandino and the Somozas to the Sandinistas and the subsequent U.S.-supported contra war.
