Churches of the Church of England

To follow up the popular book 'Cathedrals of the Church of England', Janet Gough and the ChurchCare team now explore the other 16,000 churches of the Church of England, from the parish churches at the nation's heart to the restrained splendour of royal foundation King's College Chapel, Cambridge. First and foremost places of worship, they have also been integral to England's history. One church has been chosen from each diocese to showcase their varied architecture, art, treasures and uses, from the delight in finding internationally renowned brasses and wall paintings in unassuming Trotton parish church (c.1300) to the ethereal ship-like Ripon College chapel, Cuddesdon, completed in 2013. The fresh and perceptive pen portraits of each church are illustrated with photographs.

Cathedrals of the Church of England

A cathedral is the mother church of a diocese, the seat of a bishop. Together, the 42 English cathedrals of the Church of England constitute one of the world's great achievements in architecture. They are an artistic embodiment of the spiritual sublime as well as a unique record of the history of England. They include the great medieval cathedrals of Canterbury, Winchester, Durham and Ely, which were supported by monastic communities, and the medieval secular glories of Lincoln, Salisbury, Exeter and York Minster. Later, in the wake of the dissolution of the monasteries, Henry VIII was inspired to create several new cathedrals including those at Peterborough, Oxford and Gloucester. In the ni...

Mission From Below

A radical and controversial challenge to the top-down leadership models that are so widespread in the church, instead making the case for a new model of people-driven servant leadership, guided by the Holy Spirit towards kingdom growth rather than church growth.

A message that can no longer be ignored... Drawing on the personal experience of survivors of abuse and their allies, Letters to a Broken Church speaks directly into the existential abuse crisis facing the Church of England and other Christian denominations right now. Its powerful message is that the structures, leadership, practices and culture of the Church must change radically to face up to the historic scale of abuse within its institutions at all levels. The clear requirement for transparency and accountability after decades of evasion and denial is also highlighted in these essays, along with the need to make proper recompense to those whose lives have been impacted. Contributors to Letters to a Broken Church include a serving bishop, a well-known newspaper columnist, several theologians and others from public life -- but principally people in the shadows whose voices and experience as survivors have frequently been pushed aside, marginalised or silenced within the Church. Here is a searingly honest, multi-voice call for action and redress that can no longer be ignored.

Humanae Vitae, 50 Years Later

In the life of the Catholic Church, the papal encyclical Humanae vitae represents a deepening of understanding regarding the nature of married love and the transmission of life. Despite fifty years (1968-2018) since it’s promulgation, many Catholics have yet to discover the treasure of these rich teachings. This volume therefore seeks to elucidate the encyclical’s reaffirmation of the divine plan. It does this in a unique way by providing essays from experts of various disciplines that include history, theology, science, medicine, law, and governmental policy. The occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Humanae vitae offers a teaching moment. In this compendium, experts representing a va...
