Reliable diagnosis is the cornerstone, starting point, and prerequisite of successful treatment. Therefore, development of innovative diagnostic technologies represents a hot topic in medical research. Liquid biopsy is a novel, minimally invasive laboratory evaluation concept for diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive testing, as well as dynamic monitoring of treatment or disease course. To achieve these goals, a multitude of specific, targeted tests can be performed to detect free nucleic acids, exosomes, microRNAs, tumor-educated platelets, and whole cells of tumor or fetal origin in different biological fluids, including blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, and others. Although tissue biops...
Gastric cancer remains an important issue in the world of oncology. In 2013, it ranked fifth by global incidence and second by mortality. Really, it is true that the death rates have decreased significantly in the USA and in Europe over the 100-year period; meanwhile, gastric cancer can be characterized by poor prognosis and high mortality, with the exception of early diagnosed patients. Oncological (basic and clinical) research increased extremely in the last decades (including gastric cancer). The authors participating in this book are internationally well-known experts from 11 countries of the world, working in different fields of gastric cancer research, and they summarize the results ob...
This book presents the most recent advances in the field of liver diseases and surgery, including the remarkable advances in Hepatitis C therapy, liver tumors, injuries, cysts, resections, transplantation, and preoperative management of patients with liver diseases. The editors are the dean and vice deans of the National Liver Institute, Menoufia University, a dedicated international center of excellence and a leading medical institution in the Middle East for the diagnosis and management of liver diseases and advanced training and research in hepatobiliary sciences. The authors are leading experts from four continents across the globe (North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa). In other words, the book team reflects an international dream team of experts in the area of liver diseases.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) currently ranks as the third most common cause of death. As the primary malignancy of the liver is directly related to an underlying liver condition, its incidence and profile are expected to change soon. While effective prevention programs and antiviral therapies for hepatitis B and C will lower the incidence of HCC, emerging socioeconomic issues will deliver new at-risk populations. Moreover, diagnostic techniques and protocols have undergone significant advancements. Reliance on contrast enhanced ultrasound has been re-evaluated, imaging methods being considered as sufficient diagnostic tools. Molecular characterization remains desirable, since chemotherapeutic agents still have limited applicability. In light of recent diagnostic advancements and novel therapeutic solutions, it is our belief that a comprehensive update on recent paradigm shifts and interesting upcoming developments is highly needed.
This book, "Histopathology-An Update" is a comprehensive book that deals with the latest advances in the field of histopathology. This book will be of help to pathologists, clinicians and researchers in the latest update in histopathology of various organs.
The basic researches and clinical studies on biliary tree diseases continue to advance at a rapid pace. The articles in this book were written by recognized medical experts and researchers from North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa and aim to provide state-of-the-art reviews on the current knowledge and advances in the surgery of the biliary tree. It includes the most recent advances in that field, particularly cholangiocarcinoma, biliary tree injuries, and biliary cysts.

Pancreatic cancer is a growing source of cancer-related death and has poor survival rates, which have not improved in the last few decades. Its high-mortality rate is attributed to pancreatic cancer biology, difficulty in early diagnosis, and lack of standardized international guidelines in assessing the pancreatic masses. This book aims to provide an update in the current state of play in pancreatic cancer diagnosis and to evaluate the benefits and limitations of the available diagnostic technology and therapy. The main modalities for diagnosis are imaging with HCT, MRI, USE, and PET. Some chapters review the improvements in the techniques used. Timely and accurate diagnosis of pancreatic cancer can lead to improve in the current poor outcome of this disease.
Liver biopsy is a procedure that involves obtaining a small piece of liver tissue, which is then analyzed in the laboratory. Liver biopsy may be used to evaluate a mass seen on images, diagnose unexplained liver diseases or abnormal liver function tests, and to determine the severity of the liver disease including hepatitis, fibrosis, and steatosis. Liver biopsy is an invasive procedure, and its complications are rare but potentially lethal. Therefore, it is necessary to perform liver biopsy safely from clinical aspect and to take specimen steadily from a pathological one. I hope this book addresses the future aspects of liver biopsy including role, indication, technique and evaluation. Furthermore, this book introduces new non-invasive alternatives including elastography and computer analysis of liver fibrosis.
