Lithium is a first choice mood-stabilizer for the maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder. The drug can augment antidepressants in treatment-resistant depression and exerts anti-suicidal, immunomodulatory, and neuroprotective action. For the author of this book, clinical use and mechanism of therapeutic action of lithium have been a leitmotiv since 1970. It resulted in multiple publications, and the book "Lithium - the amazing drug in psychiatry", published in 2020. Thirty-nine papers from the recent decade were selected here, in all of them Prof. Rybakowski is the first or the last author. The editorial in Neuropsychobiology on the 60th anniversary of lithium entering modern psychiatry is...

Written by global experts, this book provides a modern comprehensive insight into the pharmacogenetics of treatment of major psychoses: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression. The pharmacogenomics of three categories of the most important psychiatric drugs, antipsychotics, antidepressants and mood stabilizers, has been updated and reviewed. Some promising directions and perspectives for future research in pharmacogenetics in major psychoses are indicated. They are, among others, connected with the development of new methods in molecular genetics and with linking pharmacogenetics assessment with biomarkers, including neuroimaging ones. Finally, the attempts to use pharmacogenetics of antipsychotic, antidepressant and mood-stabilizing drugs in practice are presented. New pharmacogenetic tools may greatly contribute to introducing personalized medicine into psychiatric clinical practice.

The first remarkable results of the treatment of manic patients with lithium were published 60 years ago and to date lithium remains one of the most important psychotropic medications. In this special issue, research on clinical characteristics of persons prophylactically treated with lithium as well as the evolution of an outpatient setting providing long-term lithium therapy are presented. The most important clinical properties of lithium, such as prevention of affective recurrences, augmentation of antidepressants in treatment-resistant depression, and anti-aggressive and anti-suicidal effects are reviewed. Further, the neurobiology and pharmacogenetics of lithium are summarized and a report on the most recent international initiative aiming at performing a genome-wide association study in lithium-treated patients completes this issue. Psychiatrists, psychologists, and neurobiologists interested in optimal pharmacological treatment of patients with mood disorders and in the pathogenesis of such conditions will find up-to-date information in this special issue. Likewise it will be interesting reading for bipolar patients, their relatives and caregivers.

Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease was discovered over 100 years ago and still belongs to incurable neurological diseases; its pharmacotherapy is considered to be ineffective. This book presents contemporary views on the genetic, biochemical, and immunological determinants of this disease. This book also concerns the issue of Alzheimer's disease prevention through lifestyle and physical activity. Moreover, it describes the therapies used in Alzheimer's disease to slow the progression of the disease and delay its onset. Subsequently, the authors discuss experimental and clinical trials used now and in the near future. We hope that this book will help the readers to understand the complex mechanism leading to the development of Alzheimer's disease and indicate effective ways to prevent this disorder.

This book brings together an international group of clinicians and researchers from a broad swath of inter-related disciplines to offer the most up-to-date information about clinical and preclinical research into ketamine and second-generation “ketamine-like” fast-acting antidepressants. Currently available antidepressant medications act through monoaminergic systems, are ineffective for many individuals suffering from depression, and are associated with a delayed onset of peak efficacy of several months. The unexpected emergence of ketamine, an anesthetic N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, as a rapid-acting antidepressant has reinvigorated CNS drug discovery research and c...
