Networks and Neighbours is a refereed and peer-reviewed open-access, online journal concerned with varying types of inter-connectivity in the Early Middle Ages. Published biannually (July and January), the journal collects exceptional pieces of work by both postgraduate students and established academics with an aim to promote the study of how people and communities interacted within and without their own world and localities in the Early Middle Ages.Issue 2.1 (Jan. 2014) is devoted to the topic "Comparisons and Correlations": Reading beyond borders is, in theory, a methodology admired by early medieval scholars and considered when performing research, but to what extent, we ask, is comparative history a reality in early medieval scholarship? Furthermore, should we pursue this line of thinking, reading, writing and teaching? What are the potential benefits structurally? What new historical representations will emerge from a sustained, earnest attempt at comparing the physical artifacts, mental archaeology and socio-/geo-graphical landscapes of early medieval minds, places, connections and/or neighbourhoods?
An inspirational true story of a Marine who finds his calling empowering youth in one of the largest slums in Africa. 'The best book to land on my desk this year' Bobby Ghosh, Time 'A tremendous story of the power of friendship, love, and the transforming grace of God' Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize laureate This is a book about two forms of service that may appear contradictory: war-fighting and peacemaking, military service and social entrepreneurship. In 2001, Marine officer-in-training Rye Barcott cofounded a nongovernmental organization with two Kenyans in the Kibera slum of Nairobi. Their organization-Carolina for Kibera-grew to become a model of a global movement called participatory development, and Barcott continued volunteering with CFK while leading Marines in dangerous places. It Happened on the Way to War is a true story of heartbreak, courage, and the impact that small groups of committed citizens can make in the world.

"Gabriel Solis's study of Thelonious Monk's legacy energizes an important development in jazz studies. Respectful of Monk and his musical heirs, Solis nevertheless offers insights on Monk myth-building by opposing jazz camps in which both moldy figs and avant-gardists claim him as their own. Moving beyond exploding these turf battles, Solis comes to deep realizations about jazz as a practice. This will become an often-cited work, even a transformative one."—Steven F. Pond, author of Head Hunters: The Making of Jazz's First Platinum Album (winner of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music's Woody Guthrie Prize)
