Suicide behaviors

This book updates knowledge about self-injurious behaviors for suicidal purposes concerning frequency, possibly biological, psychological, social, cultural, and political causes; that is, it approaches suicide from abroad non-reductive vision and considers the phenomenon's complexity. The source of information is the most recent scientific research —preferably systematic reviews and meta-analyses—given the wealth of data available on the subject of suicide. It includes novel topics such as non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors and suicidal behaviors in socially excluded groups due to ethnicity, sexual orientation, and immigrants. Likewise, it presents a comprehensive view of strategies f...

Biology of Myxobacteria

Biology of Myxobacteria

Myxobacteria are ubiquitous Gram-negative soil bacteria with a complex multicellular population behavior. They are highly social microbes that move, hunt and develop to build fruiting bodies, which are associated with feeding on a diverse range of bacteria and fungi for nutrition. Therefore, myxobacteria are classified as keystone taxa in the microbial food web and are key players in determining community organization, with potential applications in the biocontrol of plant diseases, wastewater treatment, and bioconversion. In addition, myxobacteria are regarded as natural pharmaceutical and functional enzyme factories due to their diversity and the unique properties of their secondary metabolites and enzymes, making them highly attractive for resource discovery. However, the difficulty in purifying and cultivating many types of myxobacteria limits the in-depth study of myxobacteria. Otherwise, key factors involved in the biological interaction and bioconversion of myxobacteria taxa remain largely unexplored, hindering their practical applications.

Saving the Gray Whale

Once hunted by whalers and now the darling of ecotourists, the gray whale has become part of the culture, history, politics, and geography of Mexico's most isolated region. After the harvesting of gray whales was banned by international law in 1946, their populations rebounded; but while they are no longer hunted for their oil, these creatures are now chased up and down the lagoons of southern Baja California by whalewatchers. This book uses the biology and politics associated with gray whales in Mexican waters to present an unusual case study in conservation and politics. It provides an inside look at how gray whale conservation decisions are made in Mexico City and examines how those polic...
