Jesuit Art
In Jesuit Art, Mia Mochizuki considers the artistic production of the pre-suppression Society of Jesus (1540–1773) from a global perspective. Geographic and medial expansion of the standard corpus changes not only the objects under analysis, it also affects the kinds of queries that arise. Mochizuki draws upon masterpieces and material culture from around the world to assess the signature structural innovations pioneered by Jesuits in the history of the image. When the question of a ‘Jesuit style’ is rehabilitated as an inquiry into sources for a spectrum of works, the Society’s investment in the functional potential of illustrated books reveals the traits that would come to define the modern image as internally networked, technologically defined, and innately subjective.

The Materiality of Terracotta Sculpture in Early Modern Europe
Through meticulously researched case studies, this book explores the materiality of terracotta sculpture in early modern Europe. Chapters present a broad geographical perspective showcasing examples of modelling, firing, painting, and gilding of clay in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands. The volume considers known artworks by celebrated artists, such as Luca della Robbia, Andrea del Verrocchio, Filipe Hodart, or Hans Reichle, in parallel with several lesser-studied terracotta sculptures and tin-glazed earthenware made by anonymous artisans. This book challenges arbitrary distinctions into the fine art and the applied arts, that obscured the image of artistic production in the early modern world. The centrality of clay in the creative processes of artists working with two- and three-dimensional artefacts comes to the fore. The role of terracotta figures in religious practices, as well as processes of material substitutions or mimesis, confirm the medium’s significance for European visual and material culture in general. This book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, Renaissance studies, and material culture.
La formación artística: creadores-historiadores-espectadores
En esta publicación se recogen los trabajos presentados en el XXI Congreso Nacional de Historia del Arte (CEHA), celebrado en el Palacio de la Magdalena de Santander entre los días 20 al 23 de septiembre de 2016. El eje vertebrador de dicho congreso giró en torno a una temática a la vez monográfica y transversal: LA FORMACIÓN ARTÍSTICA. Se aborda este objetivo desde la doble perspectiva que plantean los dos protagonistas principales del diálogo artístico (el creador y el espectador), pasando por el historiador del arte como mediador entre ambos. Empleando este hilo conductor, se traza el rico panorama investigador nacional, tratando de reflejar las principales orientaciones metodológicas de la disciplina, así como las líneas de trabajo más consolidadas y las emergentes. Las aportaciones en cada uno de los seis bloques (desde el gremio, la formación académica o la universitaria, la educación de la mirada, la crisis de la Historia del Arte, las fuentes, la historiografía y la literatura artística y, por último, el dedicado a proyectos, tesis y grupos de I+D+i) presentan una visión actualizada de algunas de las tendencias de la investigación en Historia del Arte.
Arqueología y arte en la representación material del Estado en la Corona de Aragón (siglos XIII-XV)
A lo largo de la Baja Edad Media comienza el proceso de creación de los Estados-nación, una problemática a la que hay que prestar particular atención en la actualidad. Desde esta perspectiva, el Grupo de Investigación CEMA estudia las transformaciones de la organización estatal de la Corona de Aragón y, entre ellas, el enorme incremento de las manifestaciones materiales destinadas a legitimar y dotar de autoridad simbólica a los estados que la integraban. En este libro, los autores analizan a través de la arqueología, la historia del arte y la historia la creación y exhibición de aquellos artefactos que muestran en toda su magnificencia el poder del Estado, desde palacios hasta azulejos y cerámicas, desde coronas y panteones hasta castillos, papeles y monedas, desde objetos de arte hasta armas o murallas.
