Dimensional Analysis

Dimensional Analysis

For experiments, dimensional analysis enables the design, checks the validity, orders the procedure and synthesises the data. Additionally it can provide relationships between variables where standard analysis is not available. This widely valuable analysis for engineers and scientists is here presented to the student, the teacher and the researcher. It is the first complete modern text that covers developments over the last three decades while closing all outstanding logical gaps. Dimensional Analysis also lists the logical stages of the analysis, so showing clearly the care to be taken in its use while revealing the very few limitations of application. As the conclusion of that logic, it g...

Thermomechanics gives an introduction to the governing equations of thermodynamics and of the mechanics of fluids. The book first gives a summary of the Newtonian mechanics of rigid bodies, which is followed by a discussion of mechanical properties of infinitesimal elements, including continuum, density, surface tension, stresses, and pressure. Temperature and the zero'th law; units; and the system of finite size are then examined. The book also explains the laws of thermodynamics including its applications. Heat processes, motionless fluids, and mixtures of phases are also tackled. The text then explains the conservation of mass in a fluid flow; the equations relating process phenomena; and the momentum equation for fluids in motion. The last part encompasses the adiabatic flow. The text will best serve those interested in thermomechanics and related concepts.

The Systematic Experiment

This book explains how to plan, execute, analyse and write up an experiment. Experimentation is an essential part of science and engineering, being both the basis of discovery in science and an integral part of engineering development. The authors' aim is to provide instruction in how to perform a systematic experiment from its conception and design through to the communication of results. The text opens by laying the ground rules for the planning of an experiment, moving on to a description of measurement techniques and statistical analysis of results. An important feature of the book is the inclusion of a chapter on the interfacing of experimental equipment to microcomputers.

Mystery Of Time, The: Asymmetry Of Time And Irreversibility In The Natural Processes

The book focuses on the study of the temporal behavior of complex many-particle systems. The phenomenon of time and its role in the temporal evolution of complex systems is a remaining mystery. The book presents the necessity of the interdisciplinary point of view regarding on the phenomenon of time. The aim of the present study is to summarize and formulate in a concise but clear form the trends and approaches to the concept of time from a broad interdisciplinary perspective exposing tersely the complementary approaches and theories of time in the context of thermodynamics, statistical physics, cosmology, theory of information, biology and biophysics, including the problem of time and aging. Various approaches to the problem show that time is an extraordinarily interdisciplinary and multifaceted underlying notion which plays an extremely important role in various natural complex processes.

Teaching Thermodynamics

It seemed appropriate to arrange a meeting of teachers of thermodynamics in the United Kingdom, a meeting held in the pleasant surroundings of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, in Sept~mber, 1984. This volume records the ideas put forward by authors, the discussion generated and an account of the action that discussion has initiated. Emphasis was placed on the Teaching of Thermodynamics to degree-level students in their first and second years. The meeting, a workshop for practitioners in which all were expected to take part, was remarkably well supported. This was notable in the representation of essentially every UK university and polytechnic engaged in teaching engineering thermodynamics and ha...

Study of the Effect of Free-stream Turbulence Upon Disturbances in the Pre-transitional Laminar Boundary Layer

Part I: Hot wire anemometry has been employed to determine certain characteristics of the turbulence in the free-stream of a low-speed, low-turbulence wind tunnel and to study the influence on such turbulence upon the fluctuations within a flat-plate boundary layer. A technique was employed which provided information concerning the propagation speed of the disturbances and this was used as a means of classification as to type or cause. It was found that Tollmien-Schlichting waves did not possess significant energy until a Reynolds number considerably higher than that of the theoretical neutral point was attained and that the subsequent growth exceeded the prediction of linear analysis. Part ...

Numerical and Phyical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flow III

The Third Symposium on Numerical and Physical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flows, like its immediate predecessor, was organized with emphasis on the calculation of flows relevant to aircraft, ships, and missiles. Fifty-five papers and 20 brief communications were presented at the Symposium, which was held at the California State University at Long Beach from 21 to 24 January 1985. A panel discussion was chaired by A. M. O. Smith and includeq state ments by T. T. Huang, C. E. lobe, l. Nielsen, and C. K. Forester on priorities for future research. The first lecture in memory of Professor Keith Stewartson was delivered by J. T. Stuart and is reproduced in this volume together with a selection of the ...

Hot Matter from High-Power Lasers

This book offers an introduction to the booming field of high-power laser-matter interaction. It covers the heating of matter to super-high temperatures and pressures, novel schemes of fast particle acceleration, matter far from thermal equilibrium, stimulated radiation scattering, relativistic optics, strong field QED, as well as relevant applications, such as extreme states of matter, controlled fusion, and novel radiation sources. All models and methods considered are introduced as they arise and illustrated by relevant examples. Each chapter contains a selection of problems to test the reader's understanding, to apply the models under discussion to relevant situations and to discover their limits of validity. The carefully chosen illustrations greatly facilitate the visualization of physical processes as well as presenting detailed numerical results. A list of useful formulas and tables are provided as a guide to quantifying results from experiments and numerical simulations. Each chapter ends with a description of the state of the art and the current research frontiers.
