Joan of Arc
Joan of Arc is the most recognizable woman from medieval Europe, yet the details of her life remain obscure to the general public while heavily debated by specialists. Rising from obscurity to insert herself into the court of French King Charles VII before marching with his armies to combat the enemies of the crown during the Hundred Years War, she was eventually captured, tried in an inquisition, and then executed as a relapsed heretic at the age of 19. The Chartier Families
Guillaume Chartier (1635-1707), son of Jacques Charitier and Marguerite Loisel, immigrated in 1653 from France to Montreal, Québec, and married Marie Faulcon in 1663. Other Chartier individuals also immigrated from France to Québec province. Descendants lived throughout Canada. Many descendants immigrated to various states in the United States.
The Waxing of the Middle Ages
Johan Huizinga’s much-loved and much-contested Autumn of the Middle Ages, first published in 1919, encouraged an image of the Late French Middle Ages as a flamboyant but empty period of decline and nostalgia. Many studies, particularly literary studies, have challenged Huizinga’s perceptions of individual works or genres. Still, the vision of the Late French and Burgundian Middle Ages as a sad transitional phase between the High Middle Ages and the Renaissance persists. Yet, a series of exceptionally significant cultural developments mark the period. The Waxing of the Middle Ages sets out to provide a rich, complex, and diverse study of these developments and to reassert that late medieval France is crucial in its own right. The collection argues for an approach that views the late medieval period not as an afterthought, or a blind spot, but as a period that is key in understanding the fluidity of time, traditions, culture, and history. Each essay explores some “cultural form,” to borrow Huizinga’s expression, to expose the false divide that has dominated modern scholarship.

Shawnee Heritage II
This is the second volume in the series of Shawnee Heritage books by Don Greene. In this volume, Don traces the lineages of some prominent Shawnee, including Cornstalk, Tecumseh and many others. His research reveals relationships by intermarriage and adoption of the Shawnee with a number of other Native American nations, such as the Powhatan, Cherokee and Creek. This work pulls together the entries from Shawnee Heritage I, updates them, and puts them in a coherent genealogical framework. This is a valuable book for those with Native American roots, an interest in all things Shawnee or as an aid in scholarly research. Several appendices provide a linguistic, cultural and historical context and present Don's view of the rich Heritage of the Shawnee.
The Scottish Soldier Abroad, 1247-1967
This collection of twelve essays presents historical approaches to the lives of the variety of Scots who fought overseas from the 13th to the 20th century. Topics include: Scots in medieval Ireland; the Scots fighting as part of the 'Auld Alliance' with France in the 15th and 16th centuries; Scots active in warfare in early modern Russia; a Scottish NCO who was in Marlborough's wars and recorded his adventures in an autobiography; a shrewd colonial governor in early 18th-century America; Scottish military experiences in India; soldiers in Romantic fiction, especially Scott's Quentin Durward; the camp and barrack-room life of Scottish regiments in the 19th century; Scots in the Spanish Civil War; and Scottish soldiers as part of the final decades of the British Empire. While set against a military background, these studies also aim to investigate the social contexts in which Scottish soldiers functioned in many lands during a period of seven centuries. This volume is the second in a new series, the Mackie Monographs, based on the Mackie Symposia held in the University of Aberdeen, which have as their theme the historical study of Scotland's overseas links.
