The inspiring story of the 13 courageous Black men who integrated the U.S. Navy during World War II—leading desegregation efforts across America and anticipating the civil rights movement. Featuring previously unpublished material from the U.S. Navy, this little-known history of forgotten civil rights heroes uncovers the racism within the military and the fight to serve. Through oral histories and original interviews with surviving family members, Dan Goldberg brings thirteen forgotten heroes away from the margins of history and into the spotlight. He reveals the opposition these men faced: the racist pseudo-science, the regular condescension, the repeated epithets, the verbal abuse and ev...
A veteran US frogman recounts his experiences in World War II and the risky pre-invasion missions of the Underwater Demolition Teams. ?Into Enemy Waters is the story of World War II’s most elite and daring unit of warriors, the direct precursors to the Navy SEALs, told through the eyes of its last living member, ninety-five-year-old George Morgan. Morgan was just a wiry, seventeen-year-old lifeguard from New Jersey when he joined the Navy’s new combat demolition unit, tasked to blow up enemy?coastal defenses ahead of landings by Allied forces. His first assignment: Omaha Beach on D-Day. When he returned stateside, Morgan learned that his service was only beginning. Outfitted with swim tr...
Hearing friends talk about their ancestors and genealogical research prompted the author to wonder about her ancestors and started her on a journey that may never end. With the help of distant cousins contacted on the Internet, it was soon apparent that James Gardner of Butler County, Pennsylvania, was her great-great-great-grandfather. But there the trail grew cold. Where was he born and who were his parents? Was he part of the William and Sarah Gardner family that moved from Maryland to the wild frontier of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, either before or during the Revolutionary War? Most of the descendants of James and Martha "Molly" McAnallen Gardner married, had children and brought many other surnames to the Gardner family tree. Among those surnames are Ackerman, Brinkley, Cameron, Cann, Carson, Dover, Duffy, Fehrenbach, Grossman, Harriger, Hoge, Johnson, Mansfield, Marmie, McAnallen, Mershimer, Ott, Rohrer, Shoaf, Teal, Welsh and Wimer. With the help of more research and information from yet unknown cousins, this family tree will continue to grow and spread its branches. Perhaps we will even learn about the ancestors of James Gardner.

Příběh jednotky nejelitnějších a nejodvážnějších válečníků druhé světové války a přímých předchůdců dnešních jednotek Navy SEALs, vyprávěný jejím posledním doposud žijícím členem, pětadevadesátiletým Georgem Morganem.
"Here, Monroe tells perhaps his most compelling tale of all--about the only Highwaywoman, Mary Ann Carroll."--Jeff Klinkenberg, author of Alligators in B-Flat "A tale of triumph, of personal survival, of discipline, and finally, of faith."--Linda Hudson, mayor, Fort Pierce, Florida "An inspiring story of how one African-American woman artist not only survived a man's world but also did it during the long storm of a racist climate."--Ginger Smith Baldwin, senior legislative assistant, Florida Senate "A great read of an inspiring story about a woman of faith, character and drive. Mr. Monroe captures the essence of the Highwaymen's art, Mary Ann Carroll's life, and the entrepreneurial spirit th...
