Quand la recherche nourrit l'enseignement, quand l’enseignement impacte la recherche, des ponts se construisent. De part et d’autre, une intention commune: comprendre le monde par le traitement des savoirs. Comme le décrit Diane Leduc dans son introduction, les enseignants-chercheurs poursuivent une double finalité: résoudre des problèmes et créer de nouveaux savoirs, d’une part, et transformer les savoirs en situations d’apprentissage, d’autre part. Jean-François Comment
Né à Porrentruy (Suisse) en 1919, Jean-François Comment a choisi - plutôt que de s'installer à Bâle, Genève ou Paris - d'y passer sa vie et d'avoir un contact quotidien avec la campagne. Si depuis les années quarante, l'attachement aux paysages de sa région natale, l'Ajoie, est manifeste dans son œuvre (notamment à travers le motif de la forêt), la référence se dilue peu à peu pour laisser place à une exploration de la pure peinture. La gestualité dont elle résulte, dans les épaisseurs et les véhémences qui marquent une première période abstraite, voit sa maturation accélérée par les pratiques du vitrail en dalle de verre et du monotype. Les paysages dont s'imprègne l'artiste sont désormais réminiscences dans une peinture qui se libère de toute contrainte de modèle ou de forme. La présente monographie porte sur la production non-figurative de Jean-François Comment, des premiers pas dans l'abstraction en 1955 aux œuvres les plus récentes. Ce sont prioritairement les grands formats qui ont été retenus pour illustrer ce parcours exemplaire.
