Symmetries in Science VII
The Symposium "Symmetries in Science VII: Spectrum Generating Algebras and Dynamic Symmetries in Physics" was held at the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in Niigata, Japan Campus, during the period August 28-31, 1992. The Symposium was held in honor of Professor Francesco lachello on the occasion of his 50th birthday. We wish to thank the colleagues and friends of Franco for their participation in the Symposium as well as for contributing articles to this volume honoring him. Symmetry in Physics
Papers in this volume are based on the Workshop on Symmetries in Physics held at the Centre de recherches mathematiques (University of Montreal) in memory of Robert T. Sharp. The foundations of quantum mechanics has acquired tremendous importance in recent years for three reasons: First, a large number of experiments have tested concepts which previously were purely theoretical. Second, ideas from the foundations of quantum mechanics are being applied now to many fields such as condensed matter physics, quantum statistics, quantum cosmology and quantum gravity. Third, difficulties in constructing a quantum cosmology and theory of gravity have made many theorists examine the foundations of quantum theory to see if quantum mechanics itself needs to be modified. Very distinguished physicists from around the world gave talks on their recent research on a variety of theoretical and experimental aspects on these subjects at this conference.
Algebraic Methods and Q-special Functions
There has been revived interest in recent years in the study of special functions. Many of the latest advances in the field were inspired by the works of R. A. Askey and colleagues on basic hypergeometric series and I. G. Macdonald on orthogonal polynomials related to root systems. Significant progress was made by the use of algebraic techniques involving quantum groups, Hecke algebras, and combinatorial methods. The CRM organized a workshop for key researchers in the field to present an overview of current trends. This volume consists of the contributions to that workshop. Topics include basic hypergeometric functions, algebraic and representation-theoretic methods, combinatorics of symmetric functions, root systems, and the connections with integrable systems.
Internal Conversion Processes
Internal Conversion Processes documents the proceedings of the International Conference on the Internal Conversion Process held at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee on May 10-13, 1965.
