The bad-boy of fashion and the torchbearer of French style, Jean-Paul Gaultier is one of the few designers whose work never ceases to shock and amaze. Season after season, he forges ahead with a collection that always manages to be more provocative than the last. Jean-Paul Gaultier is the only illustrated biography of this fashion force. Photographs from the runway and backstage are interspersed with sketches and scraps of inspiration to chronicle a life that was never "ordinary" -- from Gaultier's childhood in France and his introduction to fashion, to the influence of Cardin, travel in India and Manila, and his trademark shock tactics. Gaultier's enormous personality and talent extend beyond the catwalk: to television as an anchor of the anything-goes hit Eurotrash, to film as the costume designer for The Fifth Element, and to music as the creator of Madonna's signature bustier. Jean-Paul Gaultier reveals the life of a man who has not only influenced the way we dress, but has totally changed the way we perceive fashion, sex, and ourselves.
This 2001 book presents a general theory as well as a constructive methodology to solve 'observation problems', that is, reconstructing the full information about a dynamical process on the basis of partial observed data. A general methodology to control processes on the basis of the observations is also developed. Illustrative but also practical applications in the chemical and petroleum industries are shown. This book is intended for use by scientists in the areas of automatic control, mathematics, chemical engineering and physics.
The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Catwalk to Australia provides an exclusive look at the uncompromising designer's career to date, with a special focus on Gaultier's unique relationships with his 'Australian muses' - luminaries of the Australian film, television, music and fashion industries. This distinctive, magazine-style publication brings together personal photographs, archival fashion images, and interviews with Australian icons: Kylie Minogue, Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Andreja Peji?, Gemma Ward, Catherine McNeil and Alexandra Agoston. A biography of the renowned designer is also included, as well as an essay by NGV curators Paola Di Trocchio and Roger Leong about collecting Gaultier's exquisite work for the NGV.

This book describes several mathematical models of the primary visual cortex, referring them to a vast ensemble of experimental data and putting forward an original geometrical model for its functional architecture, that is, the highly specific organization of its neural connections. The book spells out the geometrical algorithms implemented by this functional architecture, or put another way, the “neurogeometry” immanent in visual perception. Focusing on the neural origins of our spatial representations, it demonstrates three things: firstly, the way the visual neurons filter the optical signal is closely related to a wavelet analysis; secondly, the contact structure of the 1-jets of th...
Today's business environment demands a new approach to leadership, one that effectively connects individuals and organizations in the midst of change. Leading with Sense offers a new, practical approach to meeting this challenge. Drawing on her experience as a poetic translator and her expertise in cross-cultural leadership, Valérie Gauthier outlines the tenets of savoir-relier: a framework for building sensible, trustworthy, and lasting relationships that enables leaders to value difference, work across boundaries, and navigate complex systems. Savoir-relier teaches leaders to tap into their senses in the midst of strategizing, allowing them to act intuitively and rationally at once. Few l...
Control theory provides a large set of theoretical and computational tools with applications in a wide range of ?elds, running from ”pure” branches of mathematics, like geometry, to more applied areas where the objective is to ?nd solutions to ”real life” problems, as is the case in robotics, control of industrial processes or ?nance. The ”high tech” character of modern business has increased the need for advanced methods. These rely heavily on mathematical techniques and seem indispensable for competitiveness of modern enterprises. It became essential for the ?nancial analyst to possess a high level of mathematical skills. C- versely, the complex challenges posed by the problems...
The contributions appearing in this volume are a snapshot of the different topics that were discussed during the Second Conference "Mathematics and Image Processing” held at the University of Orléans in 2010. They mainly concern, image reconstruction, texture extraction and image classification and involve a variety of different methods and applications. Therefore it was impossible to split the papers into generic groups which is why they are presented in alphabetic order. However they mainly concern: texture analysis (5 papers) with different techniques (variational analysis, wavelet and morphological component analysis, fractional Brownian fields), geometrical methods (2 papers ) for restoration and invariant feature detection, classification (with multifractal analysis), neurosciences imaging and analysis of Multi-Valued Images.
A poignant story of the impact of war on a defenceless French village during the Second World War. Four courageous villagers join the Maquis, the Resistance in Vichy occupied France, to protect their families. They are swept into a treacherous conflict where one false word or brave action can result in the torture and death of people they know and love. One old man and a young girl survive the savage destruction that wipes out the whole community. This novel uses the recorded history of the devastation of many rural villages in the Aveyron, Lot and Tarn departments of the Midi-Pyrénées. Oradour-sur-Glane in the Haute-Vienne Department is a famous memorial to the brutality of the Second World War.
