Since the qualitative interview resembles a good conversation, what makes somebody a good discussion partner? It's that the person listens attentively, thinks along, empathizes with what has just been said, and does not interrupt. In short, it's someone who is empathetic and interested. Is such a person a good interviewer by nature? No, as these characteristics form only the basis for a part of the "Art" referred to in the title of this book. However, the interviewer also needs additional knowledge and skills that are discussed extensively in this book. An interview should first of all have a well defined information goal. And, only when the skills of the good discussion partner merge with the researcher's knowledge, do we observe the art of the interview. This book will benefit those who are professionally involved in doing qualitative interviews or who are learning how to conduct these interviews. Contents include: A Short Introduction to Qualitative Research * The Qualitative Interview: Features, Types, and Preparation * Designing Individual Interviews * Conducting an Individual Interview * Designing a Focus Group * Conducting a Focus Group * Processing Qualitative Interviews

"Until now, these migrations have been overlooked as scholars have highlighted instead the parallel migrations of former "colonized" peoples. This multidisciplinary volume presents essays by prominent sociologists, historians, and anthropologists on their research with the "invisible" migrant communities. Their work explores the experiences of colonists returning to France, Portugal and the Netherlands, the ways national and colonial ideologies of race and citizenship have assisted in or impeded their assimilation and the roles history and memory have played in this process, and the ways these migrations reflect the return of the "colonial" to Europe."--BOOK JACKET.

From Memory to Marble

  • Categories: Art

For the first time, the 92-metre frieze of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria, one of the largest historical narratives in marble, has been made the subject of a book. The pictorial narrative of the Boer pioneers who conquered South Africa’s interior during the 'Great Trek' (1835-52) represents a crucial period of South Africa’s past. Conceptualising the frieze both reflected on and contributed to the country’s socio-political debates in the 1930s and 1940s when it was made. The book considers the active role the Monument played in the rise of Afrikaner nationalism and the development of apartheid, as well as its place in post-apartheid heritage. The frieze is unique in that it provi...

The papers in this volume offer examples of how historians, writers, playwrights, and painters in the early modern period used ancient history as a rich field of raw material that could be used, recycled, and adapted to new needs and purposes. They focused on classical antiquity as a source from which they could recreate the past as a way of understanding and legitimizing the present. The contributors to this volume have addressed a number of important, common issues that span a wide range of subjects from fifteenth-century Italian painting to the teaching of Greek history in eighteenth-century Germany. This volume is of interest for historians of the early modern period from all disciplines and for all those interested in the reception of classical antiquity.
