The Family Tree of Fractal Curves

The Family Tree of Fractal Curves

This book explains a taxonomy of plane-filling curves (fractal curves with a fractal dimension of 2). it includes the classic fractal curves described in Mandelbrot's original book. Many new fractal curves are introduced. The taxonomy is based upon the Gaussian integers and the Eisenstein integers - each forming a lattice (square and triangular). These lattices have algebraic properties, which allows number theory to be used in describing and classifying these curves. This work has been under development for over 30 years. An earlier version of this taxonomy is described in the book ""Brain-filling Curves"", also by Jeffrey Ventrella. More on plane-filling curves can be found at fractalcurves.com

Why does the tail wag the brain? What is virtual autism? Why can't our avatars walk hand-in-hand? Will a nonverbal Babel fish save the world? Jeffrey Ventrella, a seasoned virtual worlds programmer and visual language expert, reviews the history of avatars, smileys, and other expressive forms, and considers a future of spectacular creativity. This book combines thoughtful scholarship with amusing anecdotes from the trenches of Silicon Valley. Virtual Body Language presents a thorough analysis of the neurological, linguistic, aesthetic, and technical aspects of how nonverbal communication can be distributed over the internet. Based on nearly a decade of avatar development, Ventrella has the practical foundation on which to justify even the most outrageous claims, regarding what "avatar" might mean in the future.

A pattern-finding journey through a shimmering universe of large composite numbers, this book starts with a simple graph of divisors and expands it into a vast visual sea of interlocking patterns. Why do mathematicians keep asking if there is any meaning to the sequence of prime numbers? Just think of the primes as the negative spaces behind overlapping composite patterns. The chaotic sequence of primes that pass through the Sieve of Eratosthenes is far less interesting than the Sieve itself! Did you know that the numbers in the range of nine quintillion have a hidden pattern (nested parabolas, reflection rays, swirling proto-galaxies)? These images could not have been seen before the computer allowed us to peer into the dense fabric of numbers. This book will inspire math educators, visual thinkers, and pattern lovers.

1 Introduction Imagine a virtual world with digital creatures that looks like real life, sounds like real life, and even feels like real life. Imagine a virtual world not only with nice three dimensional graphics and animations, but also with realistic physical laws and forces. This virtual world could be familiar, reproducing some parts of our reality, or unfa miliar, with strange “physical” laws and artificial life forms. As a researcher interested in the sciences of complexity, the idea of a conference about virtual worlds emerged from frustration. In the last few years, there has been an increasing interest in the design of artificial environments using image synthesis and virtual re...

Cyberspace and cybertechnology have impacted on every aspect of our lives. Western society, culture, politics and economics are now all intricately bound with cyberspace. Living With Cyberspace brings together the leading cyber-theorists of North America, Britain and Australia to map the present and the future of cyberspace.Presenting a guidebook to our new world, both the theory and the practice, the book covers subjects as diverse as androids, biotech, electronic commerce, the acceleration of everyday life, access to information, the alliance between the military and the entertainment industries, feminism, democratic practice and human consciousness itself.Together, the essays--divided into separately introduced sections on society , culture, politics and economics--present a systematic and state-of-the-art overview of technology and society in the 21st Century.Contributors: John Armitage, Verena Andermatt Conley, James Der Derian, William H. Dutton, Phil Graham, Tim Jordan, Wan-Ying Ling, David Lyon, Ian Miles, Joanne Roberts, Saskia Sassen, Cathryn Vasseleu, McKenzie Wark, Frank Webster.

This fascinating, colourful book offers in-depth insights and first-hand working experiences in the production of art works, using simple computational models with rich morphological behaviour, at the edge of mathematics, computer science, physics and biology. It organically combines ground breaking scientific discoveries in the theory of computation and complex systems with artistic representations of the research results. In this appealing book mathematicians, computer scientists, physicists, and engineers brought together marvelous and esoteric patterns generated by cellular automata, which are arrays of simple machines with complex behavior. Configurations produced by cellular automata u...
