* Second publication about the immensely successful project Eyes as Big as Plates* Photos from 15 different countries on four continentsThe ongoing photography series Eyes as Big as Plates by Karoline Hjorth and Riitta Ikonen started out in 2011 studying personifications of nature and folkloric explanations of natural phenomena. A decade later it has evolved into a continual search for modern human's belonging in nature, taking the Norwegian-Finnish artist duo to 15 countries on a quest to understand our relationship with our surroundings. This second book in the series features new portraits produced in collaboration with retired wrestling coaches, pub patrons, Sami reindeer herders, Aboriginal uncles, kantele players, librarians, wild boar hunters, and surfers across four continents. To mark the project's 10-year anniversary, it also includes contributions from several guest writers and an extended field notes section revealing the behind-the-scenes action of each portrait.

Eyes as Big as Plates is an ongoing collaborative photography and sculpture project by Norwegian-Finnish artist duo Karoline Hjorth and Riitta Ikonen (both born 1980). Initially a play on characters from Nordic folklore, the series has evolved into a search for the human connection to nature. Hjorth & Ikonen work together throughout the process with their complementary skills (Karoline is the photographer in the duo, while Riitta works mainly with the creation of the wearable sculptures). Since 2011 the duo has collaborated with retired farmers, fishermen, zoologists, plumbers, opera singers, housewives, artists and academics. Each character inhabits the landscape in a wearable sculpture made from natural materials. The book features portraits, field notes, essays and behind-the-scenes stories from many of the project's 60 shoots. With international press coverage in the Huffington Post, the BBC, TIME LightBox, Life and elsewhere, plus a highly successful Kickstarter campaign attracting a large American audience, the series has developed into a project with universal appeal.

This catalogue presents 160 objects of art and ethnography selected from the distinguished African collections of the Buffalo museum of science, the Hampton university museum (Virginia) and the American museum of natural history (New York City). The essays examine the shifting definitions of art and artifact, and deal with the question of how we look at objects from cultures whose classification systems differ from our own.

When Artists Curate

  • Categories: Art

An increasing proportion of exhibitions are curated by artists rather than professional curators. In this ground-breaking book Alison Green provides the first critical history of visual artists curating exhibitions. The artist emerges as someone who carries a special responsibility for critiquing art's institutions, brings considerable creativity to the craft of making exhibitions and, through experimentation, has changed the way exhibitions are understood to be authored and experienced. But the book also establishes a curious ubiquity to the artist-curated exhibition. Rather than being exceptional or rare, artists curate all the time and in all kinds of places: in galleries and in museums, ...
