Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, academics have been called on for possible contributions to research relating to national (and possibly internat- nal) security. As one of the original founding mandates of the National Science Foundation, mid- to long-term national security research in the areas of inf- mation technologies, organizational studies, and security-related public policy is critically needed. In a way similar to how medical and biological research has faced signi?cant information overload and yet also tremendous opportunities for new inno- tion, law enforcement, criminal analysis, and intelligence communities are facing the same challenge. We believe, similar to “m...

Sports Cardiology, An Issue of Cardiac Electrophysiology Clinics

In this issue of Cardiac Electrophysiology Clinics, guest editor Matthew W. Martinez brings his considerable expertise to the topic of Sports Cardiology. Cardiovascular causes account for most sports-related deaths, especially in young athletes. Causes of sudden cardiac arrest are heterogeneous and associated with a spectrum of cardiovascular diseases. Most cases are associated with congenital or acquired cardiac abnormalities, with most events in individuals that had not been previously detected. The field of sports and exercise cardiology continues to evolve to encompass the burgeoning number of people who are physically active, including tactical athletes, and those with cardiovascular di...

Thriving Systems Theory and Metaphor-Driven Modeling

Thriving Systems Theory and Metaphor-Driven Modeling

How is it that one system is more effective, appealing, satisfying and/or more beautiful than another to its stakeholder community? This question drove Christopher Alexander’s fifty-year quest to explain great physical architecture and gave birth to pattern-languages for building that underpin much of modern systems engineering. How is it that so many individual stakeholders consistently recognize the same quality, the same beauty in a system? This question led George Lakoff to research the role of conceptual metaphor in human understanding. What is essential to stakeholders’ satisfaction with systems? Fred Brooks, in his publications, addressed this question. This monograph fuses these diverse streams of thought in proposing Thriving Systems Theory by translating Alexander’s properties of physical design quality into the abstract domain of information systems and modeling. Metaphor-Driven Modeling incorporates the theory while examining its impact throughout the system life cycle: modeling, design and deployment. The result is holistic and innovative, a perspective on system quality invaluable to students, practitioners and researchers of software and systems engineering.

Tax Gap

A taxpayer can control a group of related entities -- such as trusts, corp., or partnerships -- in a network. These networks can serve a variety of legitimate business purposes, but they also can be used in complex tax evasion schemes that are difficult for the IRS to identify. This report: (1) describes what IRS knows about network tax evasion and how well IRS's traditional enforcement programs address it; and (2) assesses IRS's progress in addressing network tax evasion and opportunities, if any, for making further progress. The auditor interviewed relevant experts and agency officials in developing criteria needed to perform the assessment. Includes recommend. Charts and tables. This is a print on demand edition of an important, hard-to-find publication.
