This text provides a study of the education policy scholarship of leadership. It examines the ways in which concepts of educational leadership and management have evolved historically and culturally, reviewing contemporary debates about the nature of school leadership.; The question of what school leadership could and should be is at the centre of political, ideological and educational debate in many societies. These debates involve cultural conservatives, New Right marketeers, democrats and community educators, feminists and critical theorists as well as school governors, headteachers and teachers, parents, community members and school students.; These debates are reviewed and the theoretical context is illuminated by fieldwork accounts derived from the research participation of 88 headteachers working in English schools, both primary and secondary. Such accounts provide an insight into the challenges of contemporary school leadership as headteachers face new power relationships, new curriculum responsibilities and management and marketing cultures which generate moral, ethical and professional dilemmas for many of them.

This text sets out to challenge the traditional power basis of the policy decision makers in education. It contests that others who have an equal right to be consulted and have their opinions known have been silenced, declared irrelevant, postponed and otherwise ignored. Policies have thus been formed and implemented without even a cursory feminist critical glance. The chapters in this text illustrate how to incorporate critical and feminist lenses and thus create policies to meet the lived realities, the needs, aspirations and values of women and girls. A particular focus is the primary and secondary sectors of education.

Who should be educated, when, by whom and how? What purposes should education serve? Why does education matter? These fundamental questions of value are not always seen as central to the sociology of education. However, this book argues that they are pivotal and provides a sophisticated and engaging introduction to the field that is designed to open up these important debates. It draws attention to the many points of disagreement that exist between major thinkers in the sociology of education, and the values on which their ideas are based. By involving readers in crucial questions about the potential contribution of sociology to education policies and practices, it aims to bridge the divide ...

This book examines the transformations of epistemic governance in education, the way in which some actors are shaping new knowledge, and how that new knowledge impacts other actors in charge of implementing this knowledge in the context of the decision-making process and practice. The book describes knowledge-based and evidence-based technologies that produce new modes of representation, cognitive categories, and value-based judgements which determine and guide actions and interactions between researchers, experts and policy-makers. It explores several major social theories and concepts, analysing the transformation of the relationship between educational and social sciences and politics. In...

Engaging Science Policy

Situated in education policy analysis, this book is at the cutting edge of major debates across the social sciences regarding the nature of science, qualitative/quantitative tensions, post-foundational possibilities, and the research/policy nexus. Located between «the aftermath of poststructuralism» and the «new scientism» afoot in neoliberal audit culture, the book posits an engaged social science that is accountable to complexity and the political value of not being so sure. Its insistence is to put deconstruction to work in the midst of messiness, contingency, and ambiguity. The book will be useful in courses on education, feminist policy analysis, and qualitative research across disciplines.

First Published in 1995. This collection of papers was shaped by a variety of colleagues who attended the panel sessions on this topic, organized at the annual meetings of the American Educational Studies Association (1992), the Comparative and International Education Society (1993), and the American Educational Research Association (1994). The inspiration for this volume are the many policy makers, teacher educators and teacher education students around the world who have struggled and continue to struggle about and in programs to prepare teachers formally. Reading this volume will benefit the individual in that they will not only understand better the challenges they face but also be encouraged and empowered to pursue their ‘political’ goals, particularly those aimed at creating a world in which power and resources are distributed in a just and equitable manner.

The Evolving State of Policy Sociology

The Evolving State of Policy Sociology explores the dynamic and debated field of policy sociology within educational research. Edited by policy sociologist, Glenn C. Savage, this collection features reflections from scholars with varying histories in policy sociology research, including Jenny Ozga and Stephen Ball, whose work has been foundational to the establishment of the field. The book examines the origins, evolution, and current state of policy sociology, delving into the diverse theoretical, methodological, and empirical approaches that have shaped its history. Readers are provoked to consider what defines policy sociology, the impacts of globalisation on policy research, what distinguishes policy sociology from related interdisciplinary approaches, and the meanings and practices of criticality that have infused the field since its inception. Offering a range of compelling perspectives, this book is a valuable resource for both new and experienced researchers seeking to understand the past, present, and future of policy sociology in education. It was originally published as a special issue of Critical Studies in Education.
