Theta Constants, Riemann Surfaces and the Modular Group
There are incredibly rich connections between classical analysis and number theory. For instance, analytic number theory contains many examples of asymptotic expressions derived from estimates for analytic functions, such as in the proof of the Prime Number Theorem. In combinatorial number theory, exact formulas for number-theoretic quantities are derived from relations between analytic functions. Elliptic functions, especially theta functions, are an important class of such functions in this context, which had been made clear already in Jacobi's Fundamenta nova. Hugo Riemann and the Birth of Modern Musical Thought
Generally acknowledged as the most important German musicologist of his age, Hugo Riemann (1849-1919) shaped the ideas of generations of music scholars, not least because his work coincided with the institutionalisation of academic musicology around the turn of the last century. This influence, however, belies the contentious idea at the heart of his musical thought, an idea he defended for most of his career - harmonic dualism. By situating Riemann's musical thought within turn-of-the-century discourses about the natural sciences, German nationhood and modern technology, this book reconstructs the cultural context in which Riemann's ideas not only 'made sense' but advanced an understanding of the tonal tradition as both natural and German. Riemann's musical thought - from his considerations of acoustical properties to his aesthetic and music-historical views - thus regains the coherence and cultural urgency that it once possessed.
Foliations in Cauchy-Riemann Geometry
The authors study the relationship between foliation theory and differential geometry and analysis on Cauchy-Riemann (CR) manifolds. The main objects of study are transversally and tangentially CR foliations, Levi foliations of CR manifolds, solutions of the Yang-Mills equations, tangentially Monge-Ampere foliations, the transverse Beltrami equations, and CR orbifolds. The novelty of the authors' approach consists in the overall use of the methods of foliation theory and choice of specific applications. Examples of such applications are Rea's holomorphic extension of Levi foliations, Stanton's holomorphic degeneracy, Boas and Straube's approximately commuting vector fields method for the study of global regularity of Neumann operators and Bergman projections in multi-dimensional complex analysis in several complex variables, as well as various applications to differential geometry. The idea to compile recent results on the ectoenzymes aminopeptidase N/CD13 and dipeptidylpeptidase IV/CD26 arose from the great interest given by readers world-wide to the two proceedings volumes edited by us in 1997 and 2000 (Ansorge and Langner, 1997; Langner and Ansorge, 2000).
