Summary of Elliott Bisnow, Brett Leve, Jeff Rosenthal & Jeremy Schwartz's Make No Small Plans

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 In 2007, Elliott Bisnow, Brett Leve, Jeff Rosenthal, and Jeremy Schwartz were thinking about starting a company. They weren’t the Beatles, but they had a similar story of how they came together. They all had different problems they wanted to solve, and they wanted to do it together. #2 After graduating from college, Elliott went straight into working for his father’s company. He was selling local real estate ads, and he finally got a check in the mail after a few months. He realized he had a job. #3 Jeff’s childhood was shaped by his grandfather’s philosophy: A large extended family is the greatest luxury in life. His grandmother Joy was the matriarch of the family, and she held seventy cousins, aunts, and uncles together by hosting family dinners nearly every weekend. #4 The band’s success was growing, but Jeremy was starting to feel the pressure of being in a band. He decided to leave and join us, which was the first of many bold ideas that would shape a generation of world-changing companies.

Quality Education for Latinos and Latinas

As educators and legislators across the country debate how to improve public schools, the most vital factor often disappears from the equation—the relationship between the teacher and the student. According to veteran educators Rita and Marco Portales, this relationship is the central issue in the education of students, especially Latino/a students who often face serious barriers to school success because of the legacy of racism, insufficient English-language skills, and cultural differences with the educational establishment. To break down these barriers and help Latino/a students acquire a quality education, the Portaleses focus attention on the teacher-student relationship and offer a p...

Propositional Content

Peter Hanks defends a new theory about the nature of propositional content. According to this theory, the basic bearers of representational properties are particular mental or spoken actions. Propositions are types of these actions, which we use to classify and individuate our attitudes and speech acts. Hanks abandons several key features of the traditional Fregean conception of propositional content, including the idea that propositions are the primary bearers of truth-conditions, the distinction between content and force, and the concept of entertainment. The main difficulty for this traditional conception is the problem of the unity of the proposition, the problem of explaining how propositions have truth conditions and other representational properties. The new theory developed here, in its place, explains the unity of propositions and provides new solutions to a long list of puzzles and problems in philosophy of language.

Aristotle and the Virtues

Howard J. Curzer presents a fresh new reading of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, which brings each of the virtues alive. The War in Afghanistan

Editor Arthur Gillard has compiled fascinating, stirring essays and articles that explain how the War in Afghanistan impacts the American way of life. Readers will explore the issues surrounding the Afghan War from 2001 to present. Both conservative and liberal points of view create an even balance, on issues including whether the U.S. should continue fighting, whether the counterinsurgency strategy is effective, and whether the war is helping with the rights of Afghan women. Readers will also evaluate whether the U.S. should accept and learn to work with corruption in Afghanistan. Personal narratives will make your readers feel for the plight of each essayist, including a teenage son who talks about his father's military service.
