ICAF 2009, Bridging the Gap between Theory and Operational Practice
The 31st Conference and the 25th Symposium of the International Committee on Aeronautical Fatigue will be hosted in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, by the National Aerospace Laboratory NLR, under the auspices of the Netherlands Association of Aeronautical Engineers NVvL, the Technical University of Delft and Stork Fokker AESP B.V. These Proceedings will consist of reviews of aeronautical fatigue activities presented by the national delegates of the 14 member nations of ICAF. It will also contain specialist papers presented by international authors with design, manufacturing, airworthiness regulations, operations and research backgrounds. The papers will be based on the theme “Bridging the gap between theory and operational practice”.
Applications of NDT Data Fusion
Non-destructive testing (NDT) systems can generate incomplete, incorrect or conflicting information about a flaw or a defect. Therefore, the use of more than one NDT system is usually required for accurate defect detection and/or quantification. In addition to a reduction in inspection time, important cost savings could be achieved if a data fusion process is developed to combine signals from multisensor systems for manual and remotely operated inspections. The Final Flight: The Crash of Polish Air Force 101 and the Death of a President
On April 10, 2010, Polish Air Force 101 (roughly equivalent to the U.S. government Air Force One) carrying the Polish President, first lady, and 94 other high level government officials, clergy, military, representatives of Katyn Families, and other important individuals in Poland's business and culture crashed in a fog outside of Smolensk, Russia. The plane was on its way to a ceremony to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre. There were no survivors. This book describes what happened and why. It points out the complex nature of such tragic plane crashes often due to human factors. More importantly, it tells the story from the perspective of the people involved and the terrible loss to the country which resulted from this historical and tragic event.
European Cinemas in the Television Age
European Cinemas in the Television Age is a radical attempt to rethink the post-war history of European cinemas. The authors approach the subject from the perspective of television's impact on the culture of cinema's production, distribution, consumption and reception. Thus they indicate a new direction for the debate about the future of cinema in Europe. In every European country television has transformed economic, technological and aesthetic terms in which the process of cinema production had been conducted. Television's growing popularity has drastically reshaped cinema's audiences and forced governments to introduce policies to regulate the interaction between cinema and television in the changing and dynamic audio-visual environment. It is cinematic criticism, which was slowest in coming to terms with the presence of television and therefore most instrumental in perpetuating the view of cinema as an isolated object of aesthetic, critical and academic inquiry. The recognition of the impact of television upon European cinemas offers a more authentic and richer picture of cinemas in Europe, which are part of the complex audiovisual matrix including television and new media.
