How did free trade emerge in early-modern times? How did the Mediterranean as a specific region – with its own historical characteristics – produce a culture in which the free port appeared? What was the relation between the type of free trade created in early-modern Italy and the development of global trade and commercial competition between states for hegemony in the eighteenth century? And how did the position of the free port, originally a Mediterranean ‘invention’, develop over the course of time? The contributions to this volume address these questions and explain the institutional genealogy of the free port. Free Trade and Free Ports in the Mediterranean analyses the atypical ...

Jane Jacobs blev känd över världen för sin bok The Death and Life of Great American Cities.
In the twilight of the Renaissance, the grand duke of Tuscany--a scion of the fabled Medici family of bankers--invited foreign merchants, artisans, and ship captains to settle in his port city of Livorno. The town quickly became one of the most bustling port cities in the Mediterranean, presenting a rich tableau of officials, merchants, mariners, and slaves. Nobody could have predicted in 1600 that their activities would contribute a chapter in the history of free trade. Yet by the late seventeenth century, the grand duke's invitation had evolved into a general program of hospitality towards foreign visitors, the liberal treatment of goods, and a model for the elimination of customs duties. Livorno was the earliest and most successful example of a free port in Europe. The story of Livorno shows the seeds of liberalism emerging, not from the studies of philosophers such as Adam Smith, but out of the nexus between commerce, politics, and identity in the early modern Mediterranean.
"Here Comes the Sun" is an exhibition on cosmology, time, and our most prominent celestial body. The exhibition will occupy all of Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall with a wide array of works. Among these is Rivane Neuenschwander's installation visualizing the passage of time with the help of water drops; Olafur Eliasson's model of a house based on how the sun's rays fall on the Swedish capital, which is a component in his installation "Stockholm Solar Lab"; Tobias Rehberger's "7 ends of the world", featuring 222 hand-blown glass lamps that correspond in real time to the light in various parts of the world; a film by Tacita Dean central to her work in which she tracks a solar eclipse, following the course of events before, during, and after; and a living eco-system in a fish pond by Avital Geva, whose concern is with nature and time"
What was the role of art in the context of rapidly changing political alliances of the early modern period? The interdisciplinary contributions to this volume explore this question from the perspectives of "War and Peace," "Jesuits and Diplomacy," "Negotiating with Faith," and "Court and Diplomatic Celebrations". Special attention is paid to those art genres that were suitable for easy distribution due to their reproducibility, such as medals and prints. But also paintings, tombs and ephemeral festivities like fireworks served the manifestation of claims to power. The exemplary analyses provide a broad view of the political dimensions of early modern transcultural artistic exchange in Europe and beyond.

Pipilotti Rist, one of the most acclaimed Swiss artists of today, and Richard Julin, chief curator at Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall (Sweden), met for a day in Zurich in connection with the preparations for Rist's solo exhibition "Gravity, Be My Friend" in Stockholm in Spring 2007. Their conversation began at the artist's studio and carried on into the evening back at her home, while they cooked and ate dinner together. The resulting book "Congratulations!" is a very personal and fascinating conversation that reveals new dimensions of the world of Pipilotti Rist, with anecdotes from the creation process and reflections on life, art and food. The richly illustrated book features images of the major new piece, "Tyngdkraft, var min van" (Gravity, Be My Friend), created especially for the exhibition. Never before published images of recent works by Pipilotti Rist such as "Homo Sapiens Sapiens" shown at the Venice Biennale 2005, "A Liberty Statue For London", 2006, and many other seminal works are also included.
