The Correspondence of Charles Darwin: Volume 30, 1882

This volume is part of the definitive edition of letters written by and to Charles Darwin, the most celebrated naturalist of the nineteenth century. Notes and appendixes put these fascinating and wide-ranging letters in context, making the letters accessible to both scholars and general readers. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world, and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically. Darwin died in April 1882, but was active in science almost up until the end, raising new research questions and responding to letters about his last book, on earthworms. The volume also contains a supplement of nearly 400 letters written between 1831 and 1880, many of which have never been published before.

Charles Whitworth

In 1700 the armies of the Russian Tsar Peter the Great and Charles XII of Sweden met at Narva to fight the first battle of what was to be known as the Great Northern War. Although this first engagement was to result in a humiliating defeat for Peter, it marked the start of a struggle that twenty years later would see Russia emerge as a major power and radically alter the balance of power in Europe. This work examines the changes in the balance of power in Europe in the early eighteenth century as a result of the Great Northern War and the War of the Spanish Succession through the writings and career of Charles Whitworth, the first British Ambassador to Russia, and Minister in The Hague, Berl...

Charles Darwin's Natural Selection

Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species is unquestionably one of the chief landmarks in biology. The Origin (as it is widely known) was literally only an abstract of the manuscript Darwin had originally intended to complete and publish as the formal presentation of his views on evolution. Compared with the Origin, his original long manuscript work on Natural Selection, which is presented here and made available for the first time in printed form, has more abundant examples and illustrations of Darwin's argument, plus an extensive citation of sources.

A Catalogue of Law Books, Published and for Sale by Charles C. Little and James Brown

  • Categories: Law

This fascinating catalogue lists every law title published or distributed by Little, Brown. Several entries have endorsements and annotations. (Some of these, by Joseph Story and other distinguished jurists, are unique to this catalogue.) Another interesting feature is a section by Simon Greenleaf entitled "Catalogue of a Select Law Library" that lists "the Books which are useful to every American Lawyer, in whatever State he may reside" (xxx-xl). Based on the Harvard Law School reading list, the titles are arranged by subject in parallel columns. Essential titles are in listed in one column, useful, but supplemental, titles in the other. It also includes an advertisement for Harvard Law School that describes its philosophy, curriculum and fees.
