Multiscale Analysis of Complex Time Series

The only integrative approach to chaos and random fractal theory Chaos and random fractal theory are two of the most important theories developed for data analysis. Until now, there has been no single book that encompasses all of the basic concepts necessary for researchers to fully understand the ever-expanding literature and apply novel methods to effectively solve their signal processing problems. Multiscale Analysis of Complex Time Series fills this pressing need by presenting chaos and random fractal theory in a unified manner. Adopting a data-driven approach, the book covers: DNA sequence analysis EEG analysis Heart rate variability analysis Neural information processing Network traffi...

Fractal Analyses: Statistical And Methodological Innovations And Best Practices

Many statistical and methodological developments regarding fractal analyses have appeared in the scientific literature since the publication of the seminal texts introducing Fractal Physiology. However, the lion’s share of more recent work is distributed across many outlets and disciplines, including aquatic sciences, biology, computer science, ecology, economics, geology, mathematics, medicine, neuroscience, physics, physiology, psychology, and others. The purpose of this special topic is to solicit submissions regarding fractal and nonlinear statistical techniques from experts that span a wide range of disciplines. The articles will aggregate extensive cross-discipline expertise into com...

Nonlinear Analysis in Neuroscience and Behavioral Research

Although nonlinear dynamics have been mastered by physicists and mathematicians for a long time (as most physical systems are inherently nonlinear in nature), the recent successful application of nonlinear methods to modeling and predicting several evolutionary, ecological, physiological, and biochemical processes has generated great interest and enthusiasm among researchers in computational neuroscience and cognitive psychology. Additionally, in the last years it has been demonstrated that nonlinear analysis can be successfully used to model not only basic cellular and molecular data but also complex cognitive processes and behavioral interactions. The theoretical features of nonlinear syst...

This book provides a comprehensive overview of diagnostic imaging in infectious diseases. It starts with a general review of infectious diseases, including their classification, characteristics and epidemiology. In separate chapters, the authors then introduce the radionuclide imaging of 50 kinds of infectious diseases. Volume 1 covers 21 viral infections. Volume 2 has 29 chapters discussing 24 bacterial infections and 5 parasitic infections. Each disease is clearly illustrated using cases combined with high-quality computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The book provides a valuable reference source for radiologists and doctors working in the area of infectious diseases.

Imaging of Adipose Tissue in Bone and Muscle: Implications for Osteoporosis, Sarcopenia and Frailty

The quantitative assessment of adipose tissue in bone and muscle is of increasing interest in musculoskeletal research and routine in relation to osteoporosis, sarcopenia, fractures, over-/under-nutrition states, as well as frailty. However, imaging approaches to assess myosteatosis and bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) are still challenging, i.e., different fat depots (intermuscular, intramuscular, and intramyocellular fat) may represent different risk factors to metabolic health and muscle function but the segmentations of muscle and adipose tissue vary significantly, and MRI (the reference imaging tool for BMAT) faces challenges in the accuracy and precision of BMAT quantification. In addition, the studies of BMAT fatty acid composition in vivo are growing interests but limited by the estimation accuracy of advanced imaging methods like Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy or chemical shift encoding-based water-fat imaging (WFI) techniques. Furthermore, identifying the effects of adipose tissue on bone and muscle would give new insights into the pathophysiology of sarcopenia, osteoporosis and frailty and also improve our understanding of intervention.

Complex Sciences

I was invited to join the Organizing Committee of the First International Conference on Complex Sciences: Theory and Applications (Complex 2009) as its ninth member. At that moment, eight distinguished colleagues, General Co-chairs Eugene Stanley and Gaoxi Xiao, Technical Co-chairs János Kertész and Bing-Hong Wang, Local Co-chairs Hengshan Wang and Hong-An Che, Publicity Team Shi Xiao and Yubo Wang, had spent hundreds of hours pushing the conference half way to its birth. Ever since then, I have been amazed to see hundreds of papers flooding in, reviewed and commented on by the TPC members. Finally, more than 200 contributions were - lected for the proceedings currently in your hands. They...

Blockchain and Trustworthy Systems

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post conference papers of the First International Conference on Blockchain and Trustworthy Systems, Blocksys 2019, held in Guangzhou, China, in December 2019. The 50 regular papers and the 19 short papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 130 submissions. The papers are focus on Blockchain and trustworthy systems can be applied to many fields, such as financial services, social management and supply chain management.
