Ambient Assistive Health and Wellness Management in the Heart of the City

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Conference On Smart Homes and and Health Telematics, ICOST 2009, held in Tours, France, in July 2009. The 27 revised full papers and 20 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on cognitive assistance and chronic diseases management; ambient living systems; service continuity and context awareness; user modeling and human-machine interaction; ambient intelligence modeling and privacy issues, human behavior and activities monitoring.

It was a pleasure to take part in the 2005 European Workshop on Security and Privacy in Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks (ESAS 2005), held on July 13–14 in Visegrad (Hungary) in conjunction with the First International Conference on Wireless Internet (WICON) . As Program Co-chairs, we are very happy with the outcome of this year’s ESAS workshop. It clearly demonstrates the continued importance, popularity andtimeliness oftheworkshop’stopic: securityandprivacy inadhocandsensor networks.Atotalof51fullpapersweresubmitted.Eachsubmissionwasreviewed by at least three expert referees. Semantic technologies are experimenting an increasing popularity in the context of different domains and applications. The understanding of any class of system can be significantly changed under the assumption any system is part of a global ecosystem known as Semantic Web.The Semantic Web would be an evolving extension of current Web model (normally referred as Syntactic Web) that introduces a semantic layer in which semantics, or meaning of information, are formally defined. So, semantics should integrate web-centric standard information infrastructures improving several aspects of interaction among heterogeneous systems. This is because common interoperability models are progressively becom...

We often conceptualize that older adults retire into a life of carefree luxury among palm trees, golf courses, and pristine beaches. Unfortunately, reality differs today – many retire in place, and often it is the case they retire in rural areas far from hospitals and care-giving centers. For instance, over half of the older population in the state of Minnesota lives in small towns away from the center of care, which is Minneapolis/St. Paul. This year, ICOST 2008 aimed at focusing on this important reality and on gerontechnology––the use of technology to enhance the quality of life of older adults in rural lands. We had a strong technical program this year spanning many critical topics...
