This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the Second International Conference on Rough Sets and Current Trends in Computing, RSCTC 2000, held in Banff, Canada in October 2000. The 80 revised papers presented together with an introduction and three keynote presentations have gone through two rounds of reviewing and revision. The papers are organized in topical sections on granual computing, rough sets and systems, fuzzy sets and systems, rough sets and data mining, nonclassical logics and reasoning, pattern recognition and image processing, neural networks and genetic algorithms, and current trends in computing.
This volume contains the proceedings of the Eurpoean Conference on Machine Learning (ECML-93), continuing the tradition of the five earlier EWSLs (European Working Sessions on Learning). The aim of these conferences is to provide a platform for presenting the latest results in the area of machine learning. The ECML-93 programme included invited talks, selected papers, and the presentation of ongoing work in poster sessions. The programme was completed by several workshops on specific topics. The volume contains papers related to all these activities. The first chapter of the proceedings contains two invited papers, one by Ross Quinlan and one by Stephen Muggleton on inductive logic programming. The second chapter contains 18 scientific papers accepted for the main sessions of the conference. The third chapter contains 18 shorter position papers. The final chapter includes three overview papers related to the ECML-93 workshops.
Johannes Buchmann is internationally recognized as one of the leading figures in areas of computational number theory, cryptography and information security. He has published numerous scientific papers and books spanning a very wide spectrum of interests; besides R&D he also fulfilled lots of administrative tasks for instance building up and directing his research group CDC at Darmstadt, but he also served as the Dean of the Department of Computer Science at TU Darmstadt and then went on to become Vice President of the university for six years (2001-2007). This festschrift, published in honor of Johannes Buchmann on the occasion of his 60th birthday, contains contributions by some of his colleagues, former students and friends. The papers give an overview of Johannes Buchmann's research interests, ranging from computational number theory and the hardness of cryptographic assumptions to more application-oriented topics such as privacy and hardware security. With this book we celebrate Johannes Buchmann's vision and achievements.
