Es gilt schon lange als selbstverständlich, dass die Anthropologie nicht mehr in den Spuren des cartesianischen Substanzdualismus entwickelt werden kann. Seine Stichworte fallen früher oder später in fast jeder Diskussion über den Menschen, aber auch nur in dem Sinne, dass man über sie hinauskommen müsse. So fehlt heute ein neues Paradigma vom Menschen, und es ist nicht gewiss, ob ein solches überhaupt von allen Wissenschaftlern willkommen geheißen würde. Wo immer jedoch die Suche nach einer neuen Verhältnisbestimmung von Leib, Körper, Seele und Geist des Menschen stattfindet, stehen die cartesischen Begriffe und die durchaus heftig umstrittenen Varianten des Substanzdualismus auch weiterhin im Hintergrund, und sei es nur, um sich von ihm befreien zu versuchen. Dieser Band setzt sich mit der Frage auseinander, wie im Rahmen einer nicht-dualistischen Anthropologie das Verhältnis von Gehirn und Bewusstsein so bestimmt werden kann, dass es nicht zu einer reduktionistischen theory of mind kommt, in der das Bewusstsein keinen Einfluss auf das Verhalten hat.
