Maternal and Newborn Care

The midwife's role is examined in the community and family-health context in this handbook on effective maternal and newborn care for midwives and other healthcare providers. The skills, competencies, and knowledge required to make informed decisions about neo- and postnatal care are covered, including anatomy and the physiology of reproduction, high-risk pregnancies, and labor and birth. Theoretical and practical issues illuminate a midwife's role in the prevention of illness in mothers and babies, with attention to the unique challenges of midwifery in developing nations. Insights from current research studies and critical questions about midwife practice will help those new to health care understand the unique challenges of this form of health-service delivery.

Understanding Tuberculosis

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a disease that is transmitted through aerosol. This is the reason why it is estimated that a third of humankind is already infected by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The vast majority of the infected do not know about their status. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a silent pathogen, causing no symptomatology at all during the infection. In addition, infected people cannot cause further infections. Unfortunately, an estimated 10 per cent of the infected population has the probability to develop the disease, making it very difficult to eradicate. Once in this stage, the bacilli can be transmitted to other persons and the development of clinical symptoms is very progressive. Therefore the diagnosis, especially the discrimination between infection and disease, is a real challenge. In this book, we present the experience of worldwide specialists on the diagnosis, along with its lights and shadows.

'Bye Bye, Black Sheep' is a coming-of-age story about three young South Africans (two black and one white; two boys and one girl) set against the background of apartheid. It is a gripping adventure story with elements of mystery and suspense, but it also explores such universal themes as the quest for identity, unreasonable parental expectations, inter-racial relationships, racism and patriotism, and, most crucially, loyalty and betrayal. It acknowledges the complexity of such issues and avoids providing glib answers. The narrator is Chris Bates, an insecure young man, who turns out to be something of an anti-hero. His best friend (and rival) is Goodwill Mavume, who has great potential, but ...
